LONDON – Feb. 3, 2005 – Renowned for being big golf fans, cabbies are being given special rates to attend the London Golf Show at ExCel in April. The show is expecting to attract 60,000 golfers and those interested in learning more about the game. And cabbies are at the top of the list.
Ross Broadstock, managing director of RB Exhibitions, owner of the London Golf Show, said having spent seven years working with the taxi trade he was delighted to be able to help cabbies by offering them a special discount.
He said: “All cabbies have to do is send in a coupon with their badge number. We’ll then give each driver up to two tickets for just £5 each.
“We hope cabbies will take up the call that has been made by others that the show is the best thing to happen to golf in the UK for many years. Obviously an army of cabbies on our side would be great news and we hope to see hundreds of black cabs arriving at ExCel in April.”
The London Golf Show will be distributing coupons at taxi ranks in the months leading up to the show – or, alternatively, cabbies can apply to the golf show in writing.
The Fare Deal for Cabbies offer ties in with the London Golf Show’s plans to take out superside adverts on City-based taxis and is part of the show’s commitment to making it the first real ‘people’s’ golf event.
A host of celebrities are expected to attend and take part in a special challenge. England legends Sir Trevor Brooking and Ray Clemence will be leading the football challenge at the show and will compete in the World International Pairs Celebrity Golf Challenge in aid of SPARKS – Sport Aiding Medical Research for Kids.
Playing against them will be the International Pairs world champions Mark Phillips and Darren Bradford as well as a host of other celebrities.
Dozens have indicated they are hopeful of attending, including fellow footballers Lee Dixon, Jimmy Hill and Vinnie Jones; Olympians Kris Akabusi and Tim Foster; rugby stars Lawrence Dallaglio and Simon Shaw; Eastenders’ Derek Martin (Charlie Slater) and John Bardon (Jim Branning); comedians Ronnie Corbett, Bernard Cribbins and Jimmy Tarbuck; and actors Duncan Preston (Dinner Ladies, Surgical Spirit) and Kevin Whately (Morse, Auf Wiedersehen Pet).
The World International Pairs Celebrity Golf Challenge will see pairings competing in three disciplines: teeing off – a skill event on the Nike simulator; chipping – on to a green similar to that in Vijay Singh’s garden; and putting – on the indoor putting arena.
Everything in the golfing spectrum will be represented at the London Golf Show from golfing holidays and properties abroad to equipment and clothes - many with specially discounted prices.
The show will be packed with all the top manufacturers and golfing fashions, among the big names exhibiting at the show are Mizuno, Nike and St Andrews Old Course Hotel and the event has also gained the support of the English Golf Union (EGU),
The London Golf Show takes place at the ExCel Centre, London, on April 21-24, 2005. Check out the website at: www.londongolfshow.com.
