Ward captures victory at AJGA National Qualifier at Nemacolin

FARMINGTON, Pa. -- Korey Ward of West Chester, Ohio, battled the gusty wind and on and off rain to shoot a 3-under-par 67 and medal in the Boys Division of the National Qualifier at Nemacolin. In the Girls Division, Chelsea Pezzola of Bradenton, Fla., overcame putting struggles to medal with a 6-over-par 76.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the National Qualifier at Nemacolin was an 18-hole stroke play event played at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s Links Course. The qualifier field consisted of 99 players, 84 boys and 15 girls from 17 states and three countries. The Boys Division was played at 6,366 yards and the Girls Division at 5,992 yards.

Ward had been working on his long game coming into the qualifier, but credited his putting for the eagle and four birdies that helped him gain a Tournament Exemption for the future.

“My short game was great today,” Ward said. “I only had 28 putts and hit one shot out of bounds, so the whole round went well.”

The National Qualifier at Nemacolin was a stand alone event that allowed players an opportunity to earn additional Performance Based Entry Status. In the Boys Division, the top 10 and ties gained one Tournament Exemption, while the top 50 percent and ties earned one Performance Star.

Earning one Tournament Exemption with scores of 75 or below were, Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., Chad Merzbacher of Dublin, Ohio, Mark Endres of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Marcus Plunkett of St. Augustine, Fla., Bo Lustig of Belle Vernon, Pa., Andrew Park of Seoul, South Korea, Thomas Douglas of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Samuel Hockfield of Gladwyne, Pa., and Jared Howard of Dublin, Ohio. Those who shot a score of 80 or better in the Boys Division will receive one Performance Star.

Pezzola found that a long birdie on No. 15 combined with her accuracy from the tee made for a successful day.

“I hit my driver really well today and my iron shots got better throughout,” Pezzola said. “The wind was a big factor when it came to par-3’s, but overall it was a great day.”

In the Girls Division, the top three and ties earned one Tournament Exemption, while the top 50 percent received one Performance Star. In addition to Pezzola, Nadia Luttner of Pittsburgh and Regina Alonso of Huixquilucan, Mexico, gained a Tournament Exemption with scores of 79. Those shooting a score of 85 or better received one Performance Star.
