Atwal’s Asian comeback live on Ten Sports

MUMBAI, India – Jan. 27, 2005 – The Asian comeback of Arjun Atwal, the only Indian to have qualified for the PGA Tour, will be covered live on Ten Sports, world’s number one sports channel for south Asians. The former Asian Tour Order of Merit winner tees off at the Caltex Singapore Masters, being played at the beautiful Laguna National Golf & Country Club in Singapore.

Live telecast of the European Tour event, jointly sanctioned with the Asian Tour, begins at 1:00 pm (IST) for the first two rounds, while coverage of the weekend rounds will start from 10:30 am.

Arjun returns to his favorite hunting ground after a full season at the crème-de-la-crème PGA Tour, where he enjoys a conditional card this year. The Kolkata pro, who did not play a single event in Asia in 2004, will be hoping of repeating his winning act in 2002, when he surprised a quality field by recording a comprehensive five-stroke victory over Aussie Richard Green. It was the first of Atwal’s two wins on the European Tour.

Atwal has been paired with the defending champion and European legend Colin Montgomerie for the first two rounds.

As many as seven Indians will feature in the million-dollar tournament, a definitive indication of the growing strength of Indian professional golf. This includes the in-form Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa. Jeev finished tied second in Asia-Japan Okinawa Open, the inaugural event of the Japanese and Asian Tour, while Randhawa finished 2004 in style by winning the Volvo Masters of Asia. The other Indians in fray are Amandeep Johl, Rahil Gangjee, Harmeet Kahlon and Gaurav Ghei.

The major attraction of the tournament will be the presence of European Ryder Cup stars Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Thomas Bjorn. All three multiple winners on the European Tour will be starting their season with the Caltex Singapore Masters, and will be keen to get off to a fast start.

In a short span of three years, Ten Sports has become the most watched sports channel in the Indian sub-continent by far. Launched in April 2002, Ten Sports is now watched by 35 million homes – more than any other sports channel in the Sub-continent.
