Howell wins Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Year Award

Jan. 18, 2005 – David Howell of England has won the Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Year Award for the superb tee shot he played during the Ryder Cup Matches at Oakland Hills last September. The 29-year-old Englishman will receive the Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Year Trophy and a check for $3,800, which he has asked to be donated to the Tsunami Disaster Appeal Fund.

Howell and fellow countryman Paul Casey were 1-down with two holes to play against Chad Campbell and Jim Furyk after 16 holes in the Saturday morning fourball match.

Howell then hit a 6-iron from 203 yards to within five feet of the pin on the 17th hole and rolled in the putt for a birdie two to square the match. The Europeans then won the final hole to secure a victory, which proved pivotal in the outcome of the Matches.

In second place was the 274-yard 3-wood shot executed by Ian Poulter of England on the last hole of the BMW International Open in Munich. The shot wound up eight feet away, and his subsequent eagle was crucial in his success at making the European Ryder Cup team.
