Jeff Martin of Warwick, R.I., slammed home a 22-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a stunning 1-up victory, Feb. 10, to defeat Sean Kenily of Nashport, Ohio, and win the 45th annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Match Play Championship at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Trailing by three holes after a three-putt bogey at the par-4 14th, Martin benefited from three consecutive bogies by Kenily, which squared the match going to the par 5 18th tee.
At the final hole on the Dye Course, Kenily’s second shot rolled into the back fringe and his downhill putt slid past the hole. Martin then stepped up and drained in his putt from below the hole for the victory.
“I was very lucky,” said Martin, a 34-year-old assistant professional at Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett. “I was very lucky all week, winning seven matches in as many days. It was tough today because we are good friends.”
Added Kenily, 38, an assistant at Zanesville Country Club, “My short game saved me.. Otherwise, he would have beaten me badly. But he played well and deserved to win. I had no idea of making the finals when the week started.”
Martin got a quick lead with a 10-footer for birdie on the first hole. They halved the par-4 fourth with bogies and the par-5 fifth with birdies, then Kenily finished the front nine with three consecutive birdies for a 2-up lead at the turn.
Martin got one back with birdie at the par-5 10th, gave it back with bogey at the par-4 11th and seemed doomed when he bogeyed the 14th hole. “I hit some good putts today that didn’t fall,” Martin said, “but I just tried to hang in there.”
It was the first appearance for both Martin and Kenily in the Match Play Championship, the last of six tournaments which comprised the 55th annual PGA Winter Championships here. Martin earned $4,500 from the $40,116 purse. Kenily received $3,000.
