Jan. 17, 2005 – In an enthralling final round of the Australian women's Junior Interstate Series Western Australia defeated New South Wales by 3 1/2 matches to 2 1/2 matches to win the Burtta Cheney Cup for the third time in four years. New South Wales finished second, followed by Queensland.
Number one player Nicole Montgomery lead the way for Western Australia and was well supported by the under 16 players in Nacha Kirilak who squared her match with Gemma Lyon and Whitney Hillier defeating Elle Sandak by one stroke.
Queensland needed to defeat Victoria grab victory but were held to a draw by the latter. New South Wales moved up from its fifth position overnight to top of the table today following two victories on the second day of the Junior Interstate Series at Glenelg, including a crucial afternoon win against defending champion Queensland. However all will be decided in the fifth and final round of the event when they take Western Australia, who must win to have any chance of claiming their fourth Burtta Cheney Cup.
Queensland still remains in the hunt, and like Western Australia, are one point adrift of New South Wales. They must defeat Victoria in the last match to keep their title hopes alive, and also must rely on Western Australia at least squaring its final match. For the second day running, South Australia and Victoria managed to secure one victory each, and although they are only two points from the lead, final round permutations leave them out of title contention.
