Frost breaks course record in Open qualifiers

CAPE TOWN, SA – Jan. 14, 2005 – South Africa's David Frost shot a course record 7-under-par 65 on Thursday in the first round of the African leg of the International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship, at the Atlantic Beach Country Club.

The top three players after Friday's second round will earn automatic qualification for the 134th British Open Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland in July. The tournament in South Africa is one of five international qualifying events introduced last year to make it more convenient and less expensive for overseas players to qualify for the world's oldest major.

Frost shot seven birdies in a faultless round to finish one shot ahead of compatriot Louis Oosthuizen and Switzerland's Andre Bossert.

South Africa's Titch Moore and Omar Sandys were a further shot back, with Scotland's Doug McGuigan heading a group of four on 3-under-par 69.
