PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club has completed the renovation of one of the resort's nationally recognized seaside golf courses. Renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed conducted the $5 million restoration of the Lagoon Golf Course.
The renovation includes new tees, fairways and greens, routing changes on several holes, new turf standards and improved irrigation and drainage. A new addition brings the course length to more than 6,000 yards.
“This exciting restoration makes the Lagoon Golf Course even more challenging,” said Dale Haney, general manager of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. “Narrow, sloped and undulating fairways, 87 strategically placed sand bunkers and water on 11 of 18 holes will test our members and guests.”
The redesign also included some landscaping changes to enhance the natural beauty of the Lagoon Golf Course. For example, landscape architects added spartina grass, purple love grass and gaillardia flowers to the course.
Famed architect, Robert Trent Jones, built the Lagoon Course in 1961 with nine holes. Joe Lee, designer of more than 250 courses, added the second nine holes in 1977.
The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club also offers the 18-hole Ocean Course, inspired by traditional Scottish links design. The course showcases undulating fairways dotted with earth mounds and pot bunkers. The elevated, well-bunkered greens were designed to accommodate defensive pin positions. The courses have been honored with a number of awards and recognitions, including the Resort Award from Golf Digest, Top 25 Golf Resorts in the Southeast by Southern Living, and Top 75 Golf Resorts in America by American Express.
