Singh wins for charity at the Mercedes Championships

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Jan 10, 2005 – Vijay Singh was named last week’s Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) Charity Challenge winner for his first-place standing entering the final round of the Mercedes Championships. The Crestor Charity Challenge is a season-long competition that recognizes and rewards the tournament leader entering the final round at 35 PGA Tour events. Through the program, now in its second year, AstraZeneca will donate $3.5 million a year to designated health and PGA Tour charities.

For Singh’s performance, Crestor, an AstraZeneca pharmaceutical product, and the Mercedes Championships, will donate $50,000 to Kapalua Maui Charities, and $50,000 to the health care charity of Singh’s choice. Crestor Charity Challenge winners, and the tournament’s designated charity, will be recognized during the network or cable telecast of each tournament.

Singh, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking and reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year, has held sole position of the lead through the first three rounds after opening 66-65-69. His 19-under-par 200 total leads Jonathan Kaye by one stroke heading into Sunday’s final round.

“All of Maui comes together to make this event so successful,” said Mercedes Championships Tournament Chairman Gary Planos. “We are proud to able to give back to the community and provide much needed funds for these vital organizations”.

Kapalua Maui Charities, a 501(c)(3) charity, is the host organization for the annual Mercedes Championships held at Kapalua’s prestigious Plantation Course. Each year KMC donates a significant portion of its proceeds to local Maui charities. For 2005 eleven non-profit agencies will share proceeds from the PGA Tour’s season opening event. These include, Boy Scouts of America, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, Girl Scout Council of Hawaii, Hale Makua, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui, Lahainaluna High School Foundation, Maui Junior Golf Association, Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, The Art School at Kapalua and Maui Preparatory Academy.

The Health Center, with five clinics, a 24-hour emergency room, a full range of primary and preventive health services and a new dining pavilion promoting healthy foods, serves the Leeward and Central areas of the island of Oahu.

Established in 1972, the Health Center is the largest community health center in the State of Hawaii serving 23,000 patients annually.
