EVERGREEN, Colo. – Jan. 6, 2005 – Course architect Rick Phelps of Phelps Golf Design will conduct a seminar on designing affordable golf courses during the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Education Conference at the Golf Industry Show scheduled for Feb. 7-12 in Orlando.
Phelps will call on his extensive experience designing such critically acclaimed layouts as Devil's Thumb Golf Course in Delta, Colo., during his four-hour session titled "Designing for Affordable Golf - New Construction and Remodeling" scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7. Built for roughly $2.6 million, Devil's Thumb was ranked second among Golf Digest's Best New Affordable Public Golf Courses in the USA for 2002.
"New construction and design will be the focus of the first half of the session. The second half will concentrate on remodeling and renovation projects and how to save money in terms of design, construction, maintenance and speed of play," says Phelps, whose firm has been involved with more than 300 golf projects and received numerous honors, including multiple Golf Digest "Best New" award winners, many courses that appear on "places to play" lists and at least one "top-10" course in California, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, North Dakota, Nebraska and Texas.
Students attending the seminar during the international conference will have the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice by pairing up near the end of the session and routing several imaginary holes in a way that emphasizes both cost efficiency and well-thought-out design principles, adds Phelps, who is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
