Dick and Nancy Schulz, owners of The Oaks Course in Covington, Ga. are experienced when it comes to thinking outside the box in the golf business. Three years ago they were one of the few golf courses in the Atlanta Metro Area that had ever switched from Bent grass greens to Ultra Dwarf greens. This was met with little resistance from the public and due to the diligence of Curtis Singleton, The Oaks Superintendent; the greens are some of the fastest and smoothest in the country. Now, courses such as Atlanta Athletic Club, Berkeley Hills and even the world famous East Lake CC are following suit due to the ability of Ultra Dwarf to handle the heat experienced in the summertime.
Now they are at it again with the one of the most aggressive and golfer friendly membership plans to hit the Metro Area in a long time. The program allows members to play an unlimited amount of golf at no charge when they pay a one time initiation fee and monthly dues.
What makes it different from the traditional golf membership available in Atlanta is the cost. For the 7 day Gold Level membership the one time initiation fee is $300 and the monthly dues are $225 per month. Once a member, there are no charges for cart fees, and no limit on the amount of times you can play. This comes out to $57.70 per week if you are one of the first 100 members to join. Once 100 members have joined the initiation fee will increase to $600, 200 members - $1000, 300 members - $3000.
Also included in the package are 5 day Silver memberships and Family memberships, and benefits above and beyond the free golf include advance tee times, discounts in the golf shop and restaurant, guest passes, and range balls. This ground breaking plan should help out the golfer who spends anywhere from $100-$500 in green fees a month, but can’t afford to join a club with a more traditional type membership plan.
As with the Bermuda greens, this new venture for The Oaks Course should start a trend in the golf business in Metro Atlanta that can only benefit the avid golfer.
