STEVENSVILLE, Md. -- PRS Guitars and Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center Charity Golf Tournament and Concert set a new record. More than $230,000 was raised during the two-day tournament at Caves Valley Golf Club and Hayfields Country Club. This year marks the eighth year of the annual Rock & Roll themed tournament, and charity proceeds have crossed the million-dollar mark for total funds raised for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center's Living with Cancer Resource Program.
Each year the tournament offers some of the most unique, top-drawer charity foursome golf packages and private concerts in the region. Some packages this year included additional VIP golf trips to exclusive clubs around the US, NASCAR hot passes and box seats for select races and artist meet and greets among many other offerings. Packages like these have resulted in fairly lengthy waiting lists every year for the tournament. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder as well as Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel received standing ovations during the private tournament concert Sunday, September 29 in Owings Mills, MD.
The silent auction, held between concert music sets, also set a new record with more than $100,000 raised. Final bidding prices for auction items ranged from $2,400 to $17,000 and included premier golf trips to Palm Beach and Desert Mountain and a unique array of one-off, artist-autographed Paul Reed Smith guitars. Cal Ripken, Jr. also lent his name to the charity by signing a PRS guitar up for auction.
Support of sponsors like 98 Rock, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Clifton Gunderson, Alex Cooper Oriental Rugs and Auctioneers, Patuxent Publishing and Sterling Partners also contributed to the overall success of the event. Sidney Frank Importing, Baltimore Helicopter Services, Valley Motors and Nike pitched in as well with promotional course sponsorships.
Michael Hibler at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center said, "After countless hours of putting this event together, our committee, lead by Seth Henderson and Jack Marks, pulled off the most remarkable two-day event that I have ever been involved in. Events like this, while not only raising awareness about cancer, make Johns Hopkins special for both our patients and their families."
