LONDON – Dec. 25, 2004 – Trade union Amicus has condemned the actions of Widnes Golf Club, as its Steward of 16 years has been made redundant and given notice to quit the accommodation provided as part of his job.
Chris Morrissey, Widnes Golf Club Steward for 16 years, has been given three months notice of being made redundant and 2 months notice to leave his home.
Chris, a single man, has been informed that the club wishes to employ a steward and partner, with a view to organizing larger scale, money generating functions at the club in the future. No criticisms of his performance as steward have been cited as the reason for making him redundant.
Amicus Regional Officer Harry Howard said: "Both Scrooge and the Wicked Baron are alive and well and residing at the Widnes Golf Club." Chris Morrissey is being treated appallingly. To be told that he is being dismissed and evicted simply because he does not have a partner to arrange and cater for functions is quite outrageous.
He has successfully carried out the job of club steward for 16 years and never in that time has he been informed that performing the job required a partner. If this decision is not reversed, the club and its members should be ashamed. This type of attitude belongs more to the 19th century than to the 21st century.
"The club have indicated to Chris Morrissey that he can apply for the "new post", but as the requirement is for a steward and partner, it does not take much imagination to guess that Chris, a single man, will be unsuccessful.
Meetings are being arranged with the management of Widnes Golf Club at which this decision will be challenged.
