MUMBAI, India – Dec. 25, 2004 – Chandigarh’s Ajeetesh Sandhu fired a superb final round of three-under 67 to win the Western India Junior / Sub Junior Championship which concluded at the Par-72 Bombay Presidency Golf Club on Friday.
Ajeetesh, with a four-day tally of two-under 278 recorded a comprehensive six strokes victory over runner-up Himmat Singh Rai. Gaganjeet Bhullar who led on the first two days finished a stroke behind Rai with a total score of 285 against his name. The event is a part of the Nokia N. GAGE QD All India Golf Tour.
Category B saw Amanjyot Singh complete the formality of taking the winner’s trophy home with a final day score of level par 70 for his total score of 295. Rommel Majumdar was the winner in Category C while Viraat Bhadwar claimed the Category D title.
16-year old Ajeetesh is one of the calmest players on the junior circuit. Today, he began his round with a double bogey on the very first hole. However he did not let the start bother him and recorded a birdie on the very next hole and an eagle on the fourth hole. After bogeying the sixth hole he finished his front nine journey with a birdie on the ninth. His return witnessed him score four birdies and two bogeys. “I’m delighted with my performance today. It is really great to come from behind and win an event especially keeping in mind the fact that everyone was in great form”, said a beaming Sandhu.
Runner up Himmat Rai had a good final round of level par 70. Rai trailed the overnight leader duo of Sandhu and Bhullar by three strokes. However, a good final round which comprised four bogeys, two birdies and one eagle saw him nudge Bhullar to the third spot.
Amanjyot Singh who won Category B recorded his best score of the tournament with a solid level par performance today. He would have had an even better score against his name but for a double bogey that came on the final hole. Runner up Rahul Bakshi had an identical final round score of two-under 70.
Category C winner Rommel Majumdar played yet another consistent round of golf. With his total of 313 he scored a comprehensive 17-stroke victory over Khalin Joshi. Joshi who tied with Kapil Kumar at a gross score of 330 was declared the runner up on a better last 18-hole score.
