Scotland’s Marc Warren, winner of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, has been named as The European Tour Golfer of the Month for August, emerging as the choice of the selection panel after a truly memorable four weeks’ golf on The European Tour International Schedule.
Warren, the 2006 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, carded a final round 69 for a 12 under par total of 280 before birdieing the second play-off hole on the PGA Centenary Course – the venue for The 2014 Ryder Cup – to beat England’s Simon Wakefield and secure the host nation’s first victory in the tournament’s nine year history.
The victory, celebrated by the large gallery which included many of Warren’s family and friends, was the 26 year old’s second on The European Tour following his maiden success in the Scandinavian Masters at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club in August 2006.
“Any victory is special, but to win an hour away from home, in my home country, with so many people I knew watching me do it was exceptional,” said Warren. “I have had so many text messages and emails over the past couple of weeks but to receive the accolades from my fellow professionals on the range probably means the most. This award just caps what was a wonderful week.”
Warren claimed the August award ahead of a number of worthy candidates, all of whom produced scintillating golf across Europe.
Getting the month off to a memorable start was Sweden’s Per-Ulrik Johansson who returned to the winners’ enclosure for the first time in a decade in fine style, claiming The Russian Open Golf Championship by six shots.
Winning from the front is never easy but the former Ryder Cup player made it seem so with a sublime performance at Le Meridien Country Club on the outskirts of Moscow, never being headed after taking control of the tournament with an excellent 62 in the second round.
Next for consideration by the panel was Finland’s Mikko Ilonen who, like Warren, collected his second European Tour title when he followed the Scot onto the Roll of Honour in the Scandinavian Masters at Arlandastad Golf.
The 27 year old – winner of the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open in February – looked to have blown his chances when he double bogeyed the 16th hole of the Stockholm course in the final round, but recovered admirably to birdie the demanding 213 yard 18th to win.
Completing the August victors was England’s Ross Fisher who won his first European Tour title in The KLM Open in The Netherlands. The 26 year old, like Ilonen, produced the goods when the pressure was at its height, birdieing the final hole at Kennemer Golf and Country Club in Zandvoort to pip home favourite Joost Luiten by a solitary shot.
Other award winners so far in 2007 have been Retief Goosen of South Africa (January), Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (February), South Africa’s Anton Haig (March), Austria’s Markus Brier (April), Harrington (May and July), and Angel Cabrera of Argentina (June). At the end of the year, a panel will select The European Tour Golfer of the Year.
