Christianson: Blogger Ron Mon claims he's better than God

One of the best known clever quotes by Lee Trevino was uttered not long after the inimitable ball-striker was himself struck by lightning during the 1975 Western Open:

"If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron."

Now we have one of our own bloggers, the insidious Ron Mon, extolling the virtues of his 1-iron on the TravelGolf.com This Week podcast hosted by Dave Berner.

He says he loves his 1-iron. Worse yet, he claims he can hit his 1-iron!

By so doing, he is obviously claiming to be better than God. Heretic!

Many out there likely recall when John Lennon stated that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. The result of that was mass smashing and burning of Beatles albums -- a whole lot of holy hooliganism, by heavens.

I think something similar is in order here. If there's nothing else to be learned from these times, it's that fundamentalist violence is fine and dandy as long as OUR fundamentalists are the ones doing it.

So what do you say, righteous golfers? Pull those rusty old 1-irons out of your basements and beat them into scrap metal with hybrid clubs! Burn effigies of Ron Mon in the streets. (If you have no effigy, a likeness of Pee Wee Herman will do.) Boycott matches of the high school golf team he coaches. (Come to think of it, we might have another David Koresh on our hands here – think of the children, the children!!)

We simply cannot remain silent while a golf blogger claims divinity. That's what televangelists and Johnny Miller are for.
