Golf for Beginners: Phil Mickelson looking for glory in Singapore

Phil Mickelson is desperately seeking a "title" to add to a season saved (as quoted by him) only by his win at the Players Championship. Perhaps the distinction of "Champion of Champions" will fuel his desire to come out on top?

That is the name given to the winner of the HSBC Champions event which Lefty has included in his post-season schedule. But can you consider yourself a "champion of champions" without Tiger Woods in the field?

This "invitation-only" tournament would also be a boon to Mickelson as it is Asia's richest national open, the field is strong and it offers international bragging rights. Since this is his first season without a major victory, this is also the chance to win "Asia's major" as described by players at last year's event.

Perhaps Mickelson is more interested in renown than dollars? He became "the player's champion" this year and in 2004 shot a 59 to become the "master" of major winners in the exclusive Grand Slam of Golf. He hadn't touched a club for two weeks before the start of that tournament.

At this stage of his career, Phil might just be more interested in immortality than currency. If this is the case, Singapore just might be a way for Mickelson to kickstart the 2008 season.
