Tommy Gibson wins at the Trusted Choice Big “I” Junior Classic

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise native Madeleine Sheils finished with a tournament total of 9-over-par 293 to claim a two-shot victory in the 2007 Trusted Choice Big “I” Junior Classic. In the Boys Division, Tommy Gibson of Pilot Mountain, N.C. shot his third-consecutive round of 1-under-par 70 to finish with a four-round total of 281.

Sheils struggled most of the day but was able to make a crucial birdie on the 14th hole and par three of the final four holes to claim a two-shot victory. Sheils, who was playing in her third Trusted Choice Big “I” Junior Classic, was overcome with emotion after her victory.

“To win this tournament means so much,” Sheils said. “I’ve come a long way in my career. This event was my first national junior golf event two years ago and to win it means so much.”

Lindy La Bauve of Scottsdale, Ariz., finished second after shooting a four-round total of 295. 2006 Champion Kristen Schelling of Mesa, Ariz., finished five shots behind Sheils in third place, with a four-day total of 298.

Gibson played steady golf during his final round, and made three birdies on the back nine, including birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. Gibson shot his third-consecutive round of 1-under-par 70 to finish with a four-day total of 3-under-par 281. Gibson credited his play in the tournament to his preparation before the event.

“I practiced so hard leading up to this event,” Gibson said. “It’s feel great to be playing my best at the end of my junior career and I hope to carry it over to the start of my college career.”

Andrew Perez of Oxnard, Calif., and Logan Harrell of Huntersville, N.C., finished in a tie for second. Each of them finished six shots behind the leader, with a tournament total of 287. John Ladow finished in fourth place, shooting the best score of the final round, a 3-under-par 68. Stefan Brewer of Charlotte, N.C., and Christopher Morris of Maysville, Ky., finished in fifth place, carding four-round totals of 290.

In the 21st-annual Patrick Cannon Memorial Long Drive Contest, Daniel Crawford of St. Joseph, Mo., won the Boys Division with a record drive of 348 yards. Marina Martinez of Modesto, Calif., won the Girls Division as her drive traveled a record 325 yards.

The 2008 Trusted Choice Big “I” Junior Classic will take place at The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst.

The Classic, presented by The Tiger Woods Foundation, runs through August 2 at the Crane Creek Country Club in Boise. Allied Insurance is the event’s lead sponsor.

In addition to Tiger Woods and Bob Tway (1976), other notable past champions of the event include Billy Andrade (1980, 1981), Cristie Kerr (1994, 1995), Candie Kung (1998, 1999), Bobby Clampett (1975), Chris Smith (1986), Justin Leonard (1989), Kellee Booth (1993) and Grace Park (1996). David Duval, Phil Mickelson and Fuzzy Zoeller also competed in the event, which has been played annually since 1969. The Girls Division began in 1993.

More than 4,000 boys and girls compete nationally to earn a spot in the Trusted Choice Big “I” Junior Classic. Additionally, more than 1,000 independent insurance agents and brokers help organize and administer the local qualifying tournaments that determine the final fields of 108 boys and 60 girls. Participation in the Trusted Choice® Big “I” Junior Classic is open to any junior golfer whose 19th birthday does not occur prior to August 2, 2007 and who has not started college. The boys compete for the Robert Trent Jones Trophy, and the girls vie for the Mayerstein Trophy.

This year’s tournament takes place at the Crane Creek Country Club. Central to the Boise Highlands, the 130-acre Crane Creek Country Club was established in 1963. Constant improvements and reinvestment in the member-owned facility have shaped the Crane Creek of today: a quality country club occupying one of the most beautiful settings in the Pacific Northwest.

The Trusted Choice® Big “I” Junior Classic is coordinated by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I”), the nation’s oldest and largest national association of independent insurance agents and brokers. The Big “I” represents a network of more than 300,000 member agents and agency employees throughout the country. Its members are businesses that offer customers a choice of policies from a variety of insurance companies. Independent agents and brokers offer all lines of insurance—property, casualty, life, and health—as well as employee benefit plans and retirement products.
