HAWTHORN WOODS, Ill. -- Scott Langley of St. Louis, carded a 12-under-par 204 total to capture the victory in the Midwest Junior Players Championship for the Boys Division Thursday at Hawthorn Woods Country Club. Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ontario, finished at 5-over-par 221 to win the Girls Division in a playoff against Alexandra Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Midwest Junior Players Championship was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Hawthorn Woods Country Club. The tournament field consisted of 75 boys and 24 girls from 19 states and two foreign countries. The Boys Division played the course at 6,912 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,133 yards. Due to inclement weather, the final round played as an 18-hole shotgun.
Playing in his last AJGA tournament, Langley, who will play for the University of Illinois next year, had a sense of now or never to win. Trying not to focus too much on the leaderboard during the round, Langley tied a course record with a 5-under-par 67 to bring home his first and last AJGA victory. As cliché as it sounds, Langley knew he need to focus on one shot at a time and didn’t try to think about the end result. Even with a double-bogey on No. 18, he still played a solid, stress-free round, carding seven birdies.
“I was a little nervous this morning, but I just tried to draw on past experience to give me confidence,” Langley said. “I knew I could do it. I have come close a lot, but I pulled it off here and it is special to win my last AJGA tournament.”
Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay, Wis., and Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., finished tied for second at 7-under-par 209 for the tournament. Jason Burstyn of Miami, and Barrett Kelpin of Kalamazoo, Mich., finished in a tie for fourth at 4-under-par 212.
In the Girls Division, Kirby had a shaky start to the final round with a triple bogey on her second hole of the day, No. 11. Instead of getting down, Kirby told herself not to give up and that the game wasn’t over because it’s golf. She shot a bogey-free round on her back nine with three birdies in a row on Nos. 5-7 to get right back in the game. In the playoff, Kirby hit her approach shot to five feet and made par on No. 18 to seal the victory against Lederhausen.
“Going into today, I wished I had a bigger lead,” Kirby said. “I didn’t really know how I was doing; I just looked at the leaderboard as I played. I had three birdies and I didn’t even know it.”
Milena Savich of Carmel, Ind., finished third at 7-over-par 223 for the tournament.
