I was surprised to find out Grand Cayman even has golf. This was a few years ago, of course, before I became the leading expert in the Western world on Caribbean golf.

The small island, only about six miles wide and 22 miles long, has three courses – one 18-hole layout and two nine-holers.

The best course, most people would probably agree, is Blue Tip at the Ritz-Carlton. Designed by Greg Norman, it has the usual impeccable conditioning of Ritz-Carlton courses, and it's a fun, challenging layout. Officials are talking about adding another nine holes – they should, if they want to make this a golf destination.

Safe Haven has the advantage of being the only 18-hole course on the island. It's 6,605 yards from the back tees, but can play like a 7,000-yard course with the wind factored in.

The Britannia is a nice, little course – actually it's two courses in one. It plays some days as a regulation nine-holer, other days it's set up as an 18-hole executive course. It's not in the best shape right now due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Ivan, but they're working on it.
