VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. -- Macgregor Hoobery of Santa Maria, Calif., took a seven-stroke lead into Thursday’s final round at the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch and held on to win by four strokes with a three-day total of 7-under par 209. In the Girls Division, Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., was tied for fifth place and three strokes behind after the second round and shot 3-over par to win by two strokes with a three-day total of 9-over par 225.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Assocation, the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch was a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 89 boys and 28 girls, ranging in age from 12-15. Thirteen states and one foreign country were represented with 84 players from California. The event was staged on the par-72 Marshallia Ranch Golf Course with boys tees set at 6,536 yards and girls tees set at 5,651 yards.
Hoobery has now played in the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch for three years in a row, but 2007 marks his best finish and his first win in any AJGA event. He was the only player to record a single round score of 67 in the tournament, which he did in both the first and second rounds to finish with a three day total of 67-67-75—209.
“The wind made things tougher out there today, but I just tried to be patient and take it one shot at a time,” Hoobery said. “My putting was strong all three days, but AJGA fields are always tough and I had to be on my game.”
Shun Yat Hak of Lake Mary, Fla., took second place honors at 213, John Young Kim of Cypress, Calif., took third at 216, and Raymond Gerow of Santa Barbara, Calif., took fourth place at 217. Tied for fifth at 218 were Yi Keun Chang of Walnut, Calif., Mason Field of Santa Barbara, Calif., Nicholas Austin of Midlothian, Va., and Tyler Kato of Seattle, Wash.
In the Girls Division, Lee also brought home her first AJGA victory in only her third AJGA event with a three-day total of 78-72-75—225. The 12-year-old took third place in the Junior All-Star at Lake Havasu in June and said she is excited to be playing so well this early in her career.
“I knew I had a chance to win today because the wind would make conditions tough for everyone,” Lee said. “I didn’t know how the leaders were doing, though, so I just tried to keep a level head and stay around par.”
Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos, Calif., finished in second place at 227 and Demi Frances Runas of Torrance, Calif., finished in third place with a three-day total of 228.
The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
