HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. -- Jae Han Chun of Ansung-City, South Korea won the Boys Division of the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands in a sudden-death playoff after finishing with a 10-under-par 206 tournament total. Taking the win in the Girls Division was Seo Hee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash., with a 5-over-par 221 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Boyne Highlands Resort — Moor Course. The 144-player field featured players from 24 states, South Korea, Mexico and Canada. The course was played at 6,850 yards for the Boys Division and 6,079 yards for the Girls Division.
After completing the round, Chun and Aaron Fitzpatrick of Orlando, Fla., were tied, after shooting final rounds of 4-under-par 68 and 6-under-par 66, respectively. In the sudden-death playoff, each birdied No. 18 and parred No. 10. On the par-4 ninth, Chun rolled in the birdie putt to seal the win.
“This is a real special win for me; it proves that I can win in America and I’ve had so much fun here,” Chun said. “I just attacked the course and focused on playing the game.”
In third place was Adam Sumrall of South Bend, Ind., carding a 7-under-par 209 tournament total. Behind him in fourth was Blake Redmond of Sugar Land, Texas, recording a 5-under-par 211 tournament total. Taking the fifth place trophy was Chan Kim of Honolulu, shooting a 3-under-par 213 tournament total.
Moon, who was in a three-way tie heading into Friday’s final round, said her main objective was to not think about scores and focus on her putting. Moon responded to a triple bogey on No. 12 by coming back with a birdie on No. 13 to get back on pace to finish out her round with a 2-over-par 74.
“I just thought to myself ‘keep doing what I did before’ and it worked out for me,” Moon said. “Yesterday I stayed at the putting green for about two hours after my round then came back again after the Care Fore the Course party.”
Moon received sixth place in the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands in 2006.
Finishing with second place honors was Lindsey Solberg of Verona, Wis., posting a 7-over-par 223 tournament total. In third place was Margarita Ramos of Mexico City, Mexico, carding a 2-under-par 70 on the day for an 8-over-par 224 tournament total.
