Sorenstam is named Sportswoman of the Year

Dec. 16, 2004 – The Women's Sports Foundation has honored Annika Sorenstam with its Sportswoman of the Year Individual Award. The award was presented at its 25th Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.

In 2003, Sorenstam became only the fourth player in LPGA history to post more than five wins in four consecutive seasons. Internationally, she was a member of the victorious European Solheim Cup Team and won the Nichirei Cup on the LPGA of Japan Tour. She became the LPGA's first international player to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

A major highlight of her career came when she became the first woman since 1945 to compete on the PGA Tour when she played the Bank of America Colonial in Forth Worth, Texas, and later participated in two separate Skins Games, both in competition with men.

She now has 54 LPGA wins to her credit, the most by any international player in LPGA history and ranking her sixth on the LPGA's all-time career wins list.

Athletes were considered for the Sportswoman of the Year Individual Award based on their athletic achievements between Aug, 1, 2003, and July 31, 2004. Athletes are nominated by sport governing bodies and the public. The winners are determined by voting members of the Women's Sports Foundation and its Awards Committee.
