Myrtle Beach's reputation as one of the world's great golf destinations has been further enhanced, as 10 public golf courses on the Grand Strand are included in Golf Digest's 2007-08 ranking of "America's Top 100 Greatest Public Courses," which appears in its May issue.

Myrtle Beach, S.C. had the largest number of public golf courses on the list. The state of Michigan stands at second, with nine courses on the Golf Digest list.

The magazine says the best public golf course in Myrtle Beach is the Dunes Golf & Beach Club, which placed 28th in the rankings. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. design opened in 1948 and has played host to the Senior Tour Championship.

"The Dunes is the most revered golf course along the Grand Strand, and the recipient of most of the awards the experts deign to hand out to Myrtle Beach area golf courses," National Golf Editor Tim McDonald wrote for TravelGolf.com.

Tidewater Golf Club & Plantation stands at No. 41 on the list, with the Heritage Club at No. 46 and the Love course at Barefoot Resort coming in at No. 53 - besting the Fazio course at Barefoot, which came in at No. 92.

Myrtle Beach National"Davis Love III is hardly an unknown, but he went up against Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Greg Norman - the best and brightest of American golf design - at this mega-facility, and surprised everybody by emerging with the best layout," McDonald wrote.

The other Myrtle Beach golf courses in the Top-100 showcase the diversity of golf in Myrtle Beach. Rivers Edge Golf Club (No. 62), Tiger's Eye Golf Links (73), King's North at Myrtle Beach National (76), Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (86), True Blue Plantation (87) round out the Myrtle Beach golf courses honored.

Golf Digest's survey of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses began in 1966, with the rankings based on play and scrutiny of thousands of golf courses every two years by a panel of more than 800 golfers. The magazine says courses are judged, among other things, on shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, aesthetics, conditioning and ambiance.
