Tiger Woods' reign is anything but boring

Tiger Woods' Wachovia Championship victory this past week probably drew a lot of sighs from those golf fans out there - and there are many - who are simply tired of Tiger winning.

I'll confess right here: I'm not one of those golf fans.

Tournament after tournament, I want Tiger to win, and on those rare occasions when he disappoints - take this year's Masters, for instance - I find it hard to get behind those who take pleasure in anybody winning so long as his last name isn't Woods.

Don't get me wrong: The fact that, in theory, anybody can win on the PGA Tour is what sets golf apart from other sports. And while golf's egalitarianism is something we should all believe in, if I'm honest I'd have to say that I still want to see Tiger hoisting those trophies.

Why?

The nearest I can come to explaining this conceit is that it is rare in sports to watch pure domination, where talent and talent alone is the sole factor on display, and it is only those individual sports like golf and tennis that can give this to us.

These sports seem to obey some natural order of things: Domination lasts until someone better comes along. Simple.

There was no more dominating female tennis player in the world for years than Steffi Graf - and I'm talking years here. Then, Monica Seles came along. Pete Sampras might have been unbearably boring, but those years when no one could beat him gave us a clear picture of just who the best tennis player in the world was (ditto for Roger Federer's current reign).

That's what we're ultimately looking for in competitive sports, right? The best. Pure and simple.

That's something NBA basketball and pro baseball can't give us, because domination there is tainted by a team's wealth and salary cap. A team can have the best players, because they can afford them. When the Bulls and Lakers and Yankees and Cowboys were unstoppable, I yawned - and rooted against them.

Let's face it, it's interesting to see just how long someone can be the best, and that's why I'm not tired of Tiger winning. The golf gods will send us someone else eventually, when the time is right.

Poipu BayKauai Island in Hawaii has great golf
and unbeatable resort options

In terms of Hawaiian golf, you can't get more remote - or more beautiful - than Kauai Island, a small tropical paradise rich with lush jungles, towering cliffs and bottomless canyons. The northern most of the Hawaiian islands (and only little Niihau is more west), it might take some effort to get here. But as our correspondent writes, you'll be glad you did, as Kauai's world class golf is second to none.
