PING. The perfect shot, my drives were as beautiful as ever. I always maintained my state-of-mind while I played golf. This was hard for me to do. Usually when I hit a bad shot, my Dad would remind me of his “metal golf game” motto: “Let’s not turn one bad shot into two.” It was good, not quite Dr. Phil material, but, good enough for me. “Great shot, Chris,” he said. My Dad was getting to be quite good at golf. But, on the occasion that I beat him, I never rubbed it in. Hubris, my English teacher would call it. He never said anything, but, he had a lot of pride. I was 13 that round, and he was about 50 years older than me. But, that never mattered. So, I took a few steps back, before he took his swing. I looked at the hole. It is sloping downwards par 4, with bunkers to the right in the fairway, and one greenside bunker. Not a very tough hole, if you didn’t slice. The weather was hot, and the course was incredibly dry. So, the ball went about 20 feet farther than it should (my short game needed enough help as it was). So, my Dad hit. It was going straight, until it started to slice. It sliced right into a huge hill, it looked like a hole. “It’s okay, Dad,” I said. He put his arm around me and he went over to the cart. First we stopped to where his ball was. He hit a beautiful pitch shot that landed about 5 feet from the cup. “Nice Dad,” I said. “Thanks Bud.” So we went to look for my ball. We looked and looked but we couldn’t find it. So, I took my 2 stroke penalty and chipped it on, about 15 feet from the cup. So, I had a pretty tough shout for par. I putt and it went in! Nice I told myself. When I went to pick it up out of the hole, I saw 2 balls in there. “Dad have you putt yet?” “Nope,” he said. I looked at the two balls. Both were Pinnacle Exceptions, with my initials. “DAD?!” “Yeah,” he said still visualizing his putt. “I JUST GOT A HOLE IN ONE!” We hugged and had our Kodak, father-son moment and we drove off into the sunset with our cart and my luck.
