I just returned from a quick trip to Northern Ireland to play some of the best links courses on the planet. Although I expected that playing Royal County Down would be a transformative experience, I did not anticipate that my new golf travel bag would be such a revelation.

The Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian Travel Bag ($290) has flip-out aluminum legs with wheels. When extended, the legs prop the bag at the perfect angle to grasp and roll easily over nearly any surface.

Frankly, I didn't think these wheeled legs would be worth the extra motion of flipping them in and out, but after just a few minutes, I realized I had been woefully wrong.

The utility and convenience of the Club Glider were confirmed by nearly everyone I met in Northern Ireland.

One taxi driver said, "Well, we need a lot more of these!"

Another one exclaimed, "I've never seen one like this! Makes it quite easy to move, doesn't it?"

My only real concern with the Club Glider was whether the leg mechanism would add too much weight to the bag -- and weight is a critical factor when flying with clubs. My concerns were also misplaced, as the total weight of the empty bag is 11.3 lbs., which is fairly equivalent to other larger, well padded travel bags. With my clubs, balls, a pair of shoes, an umbrella, and a rain suit, the total weight was still safely under Aer Lingus's 50 lb. limit.

Sun Mountain's Club Glider Meridian Golf Travel Bag: The verdict

One golf writer who travels more than nearly anyone I know told me his Club Glider was a "game changer." He said he'd never travel again without it.

After this jaunt to Northern Ireland, I have to agree. My clubs fit snugly and safely, and I felt more nimble dodging airport foot traffic than my fellow travelers with their large suitcases.
