No Tiger June 20, 2008, 6:35 pm

Has the whole golf world gone mad? There is plenty of "good" golf to watch without Tiger. Sure he will be missed, but we can now get a chance to see some of the many other good golfers. There are pleny of them and I am sure a true golf fan will continue to watch so the "powers that be" needn't worry.

Sportsmen? June 19, 2008, 11:37 am

Sportsmen?
I think this is the point .Golf as played on the US Tour is no longer a sport,it is a business. The sport went out of it when the big money came in.
Having just read about Tiger playing with a torn this and a fractured that, says very little for his doctor and indeed for himself as he no doubt had the last word on whether to play or not. The manic chasing of records to the exclusion of all else ,especially health ,says a lot about the man and it is not good. How often does he have to prove that he is the best? Some day he will realize ,as many if not most rugby players do, when they reach 40 ,and can hardly walk and by 50 they have more spare parts than the local motor store, that there are more important things. At age 32 Tiger should be looking at the broader life picture. What he needs now is some good friends with some good advice.

Tiger Detractors Rejoice... June 18, 2008, 12:48 pm

It has been determined that Tiger played this 2008 U.S. Open, and won, with a torn ACL and a double stress fracture to his tibia. Now you cynical and negative detractors can rejoice in the fact that Mr. Woods will be out for the remainder of this PGA season. You'll have to hold your negativity until the end of the year, when he is voted PGA Tour Player of the Year. That'll really chap your narrow-minded behinds!!!

ivory, you're fighting a losing battle. irrationality can never be challenged by rationality. i appreciate your efforts, and i agree with your assessment of the source of the venom that is routinely spewed on this site, but don't waste your time and energy trying to influence it. the tiger haters were there long before he uttered his first swear word or threw his first club. they need to vent. that's it for this dude. off to more sane discussions.

Tiger Woods vs. Rocco Mediate June 18, 2008, 11:02 am

by Walt
It is only too sad that Tiger Woods were not more of a "TRUE" sportsman. Yes, he is great, yes he has done great things in the sport of golf. BUT, he is also a VERY poor sportsman. I have NEVER seen ANY other pro golfer show such poor sportsmanship while under the spotlight and on TV. He gets mad at the fans (part of pro golf) he throws clubs when he hits a bad shot (talk about showing what NOT to do). In my opinion a person that makes the kind of money that he does in the sport has NO business showing that kind of childishness on TV to the millions of young and up and coming golfers of the world. I was SO hoping that Rocco Mediate was going to win the US Open simply because he is a MUCH more class act than Tiger Woods will ever be.
Sorry folks, that's just my opinion.
PS
I have NEVER thrown golf clubs like Tiger does and I golf much worse than he does.
Thanks

Walt, you wouldn't know a "true sportsman" if they bit you on your classless butt. You're just one of many who continuously demean this man for one basic reason only...he does not fit your socially acceptable demographic(s), and that is truly sad. This man is not the type of athlete who appears in the news and tabloids for breaking the law, using drugs, domestic violence, racially or gender insensitive comments, or any activities by which we've come to define far too many pro athletes. Yet you and many other contributors here continue to characterize him as such. He praises, laughs and jokes with, affectionately hugs, and congratulates his mighty opponent...describing Rocco Mediate as one of the nicest guys on tour. Plays heroically and wins, and still you heap insults. Never in the history of sports in America has an American, who has done so much for his/her sport and humanity, been so demeaned with absolutely no provocation. It seems he's on the wrong side of your acceptable demographic...and please do not insult the intelligent readers with the usual BS response.

Wolfrum June 18, 2008, 6:08 am

About time someone highlighted the sycophantic nature of the TV coverage when Tiger is involved. It has been obvious for a number of years on this side of the pond.I know lots of golf fans who are turned off and will not watch that type of coverage.Regarding Torrey Pines ,I think Rocco will have made a lot more friends than Tiger.
The one sided coverage actually turns people off Woods which is unfortunate as he is such a great player. We got multiple repeats of his triumphalism on the 72nd hole ,a display which was out of place in a golf tournament. We did not however get any repeats for his petulant display at the same hole when he flung his club back into the bunker, twice I think.Imagine Jack or Arnie doing that.Winning does not make you a gentleman.

Maybe it is just your one-sided view of the coverage that is the issue. In the ten years+ that Tiger has been on tour, not once has his professional peers even come close to suggesting his lack of professionalism or that he is not a gentleman. Rocco Mediate comments about Tiger Woods are those that you and others with your point of view should try to emulate. It is obvious that he and Tiger's professional peers have a more concise and realistic view of the man.

William Wolfrum June 17, 2008, 8:44 pm

I have had enough of this newsletter. Obviously not a real golfer, or someone who can really appreciate greatness, Mr. Wolfrum is either just trying to justify why you are paying him or is deaf in one ear. Total drivel. The media paid just do's to Rocco. How can you ignore another monumental performance by one of the best athletes of all time? Right after I write this I am unsubscribing to your newsletter. Criticism without foundation just exposes his envy and jealousy. C-ya!

Mr. Mason,
I plead with you to reconsider your decision to unsubscribe to this sometimes narrow-sighted approach to reporting. Obviously, Mr. Wolfrum and others who comment here have an unprecedented bias against one of the greatest American athletes ever, and quite possibly the greatest golfer of all-time. People like you are needed to present a balanced point of view on the game we all love and honor, and appropriate commentary on those professionals who play the game. It also obvious the Mr. Wolfdrum and his following of Tiger-haters personifies the concept that there is a grave difference between those who play golf and those who are true golfers...players!!! It continues to amaze me, as it seems the same with you, the incredible difference in the perception of Tiger from men and women in his profession and that of those who claim to know and enjoy golf. Judging from the comments made by Mr. Wolfrum and others here, they were either watching a different tournament than what was shown, or they are simply the biased, discriminatory, unbalanced people their comments illustrate them to be. Regardless of your final decision Mr. Mason, I am not going anywhere...except to step up and confront this envious, jealous, and socially tainted response to a man who does not deserve it. And I will be doing so repeatedly!!!!
