Spare a thought for those of us watching the US Open this weekend from the comfort of their homes in England -the 8 hour time difference will mean some rather tired golf fans getting to work late on Monday morning !

If all most golf writers had to do was write one short online column, they'd probably spend the entire day walking the course and enjoying the day and golf like a fan. Unfortunately, many of them actually have to work. I'm sure many of them would love to have a free ride. Please post something when your position becomes available.

Dude, I was a commercial fisherman for four years in Alaska. And drove a truck in Southern California for three years, among other things, all before going to college at age 28.
So if you want to whine about the "work" involved in writing about golf, feel free. But when I covered sports full-time, covered college basketball, high school football, freakin' gymnastics, cross-country, wrestling, etc., it felt like a vacation. Because, basically, it is.
You whining about the "work" you do as a golf writer is really, really, really pathetic. Sorry, Alan, I know of where I speak. If you think writing golf and hitting deadlines is tough, it likely just means you never had a real job before.
At its most difficult, being a waiter at a Dennys is still tougher than being a sportswriter.

If Mr. Baldwin could link to three stories from newspaper writers complaining about the prime-time U.S. Open, I'd love to see them.
I think he's fishing here.

Baldwin's rant June 10, 2008, 9:35 am

Mr. Baldwin:
I'd actually respect your opinion on the profession of golf writing, deadlines, etc., if I ever saw you in a major championship media center -- which I never have.
It's real easy to pass judgement when you're writing for an obscure web site.

Deever, I'm in Torrey Pines' media center as I type this and I'll be here all week, so feel free to come over and introduce yourself. First section of seating, third row from the back. Sometimes, I'll actually be out on the course though.
But I'm always happy to meet one of WorldGolf.com's non-obscure readers.

Although I despise Chris and everything he stands for, believes in, eats, thinks about, etc., I'd be remiss in pointing out:
- Chris Baldwin has covered several majors and countless golf tournaments. As he is a former newspaper sports editor, I'd say Chris has covered a ridiculous amount of other sports as well, live from the venues, meeting deadlines. In fact, Chris, Tim McDonald, Brandon Tucker, Editor Mark Nessmith and myself all have logged plenty of experience covering golf and other events, and meeting deadlines.
Also, Chris was dead on in his column. Though, of course, it pains me to say that.
