steroids in golf January 10, 2008, 9:41 am

by Dan Swinscoe
I would like to take issue a little bit with Chris Baldwin's article about steroids. Particularly the comment that Clemens and Bonds "catch hell" for using steroids because they are baseball players but Shawn Merriman gets off easy as a football player. It's not that they are baseball players for the strong public response, it's that they are record setting elite. Ryan Franklin was busted for steroids and he's a baseball player but he's not "catching hell" because most people have never heard of him. People care when it's the big time player the player getting awards and records because those are historical markers that we as sports fans would like to keep clean. In golf the only person you need to test is Tiger. If the other guys are cheating and are still that far behind him yikes!

steroids in professional golf January 9, 2008, 12:21 pm

Chris Baldwin's article speculating about the possible use of steroids in pro golf is interesting, but well off the mark. As we know from the volumes of steroid information desseminated by the media over the past five years, (and in some cases, first-hand observation) in addition to enhancing muscle mass and recovery, steroid users also experience huge emotional shifts (remember Clemens hurling that broken bat at Mike Piazza for no apparent reason)and as we all know, that last thing pro golfer needs is huge emotional shifts, especially in the heat of a tournament. In fact, while most professional athletes are experiencing a decline of physical skills in their 30's and 40's (except Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds . . . hmmmm?) pro golfers usually find themselves becoming more proficient at their trade -- why? -- mostly because they have learned to master their emotions and concentrate on the task at hand.
Steroids are no advantage for pro golfers and can be a huge disadvantage.

Wow. For once I think Chris Baldwin is right on! Miracles do occur. However, his grammar needs some work. "With the assist of . . . "? How about "assistance"? ;-) Anyways, at least Chris has an opinion -- you don't have to wonder, "What's this guy really thinking!?" I like that. Rock on, Chris.

PEDs January 8, 2008, 5:27 pm

by Nigel Roberts-Powis
If and when (better later than never) both USAGA and R&A introduce full testing for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs)and a player tests positive for both 'A' & 'B' samples, that player should be banned for the amount of time set by the WADA NOT BY AN ASSOCIATION.
After appeal to Arbitration Committee the player, should the testing procedure not conform to required standards or any other (feeble) excuse stated by the player for having the substance in the bodys system there should be no futher excuses, no pressure from any source eg promoters, sponsors, associations that player should be BANNED for the prescribed time. I would like to see introduced a LIFE BAN FROM ANY SPORT.
Drugs in sport are an abomination and world golf, without any further delay should be taking a stand against their use in the sport.
Golf should be an honest sport, unfortunately the amount of world travelling undertaken by players, the amount of golf played that includes both physical and mental stresses (6 days a week-and practicing)I do wonder as a coach in other sports, team manager, and someone who has been on the client side of testing how these human beings cope!

Golf and roids January 8, 2008, 2:34 pm

Something else for golf to think about, if not on tour, on the way to getting there: There are people who have done a lot worse than cheating to become millionaires on someone elses money. Thankfully, they're either in jail, on death row, or 6 feet under (most anyway).

Honor is not dead January 8, 2008, 2:28 pm

I am going to stick to the old fashioned saying that "honesty is the best policy" and continue to believe that the golfers at the top of the game continue to uphold the standards on which the game is based. I know my share of cheaters in the amateur ranks and have been beaten by the pencil more than once, but I trust that the players that represent our game to the world would not do anyting to harm it.

Steroids January 8, 2008, 1:53 pm

I feel this whole issue of who lying and who is not is a waste of every one's time. If baseball, golf or any sport is going to charge any of the players with an abuse of any drug, they should prove it through the justice system. I am tired of listening to all the experts telling us who is lying and who is not. Either charge these players with something or get off their backs.

drugs & golf & baseball January 8, 2008, 1:40 pm

All of this roids & HGH debate really makes one stop to reconsider how great the Greats of bygone eras were. Walter Hagen and Babe Ruth accomplished what no one had before and what few have done since despite all the booze and syphillus coursing through their veins. Just imagine how much they could have achieved if they'd been living "clean" lives, only using HGH and roids! Maybe rather than banning drugs, we should enforce their use. Let's see how great Tiger is all liquored up, or how well Clemens pitches stoned out of his gourd (like Vida Blue, I believe, once did).

Steroids and golf January 8, 2008, 1:31 pm

All other sports aside, having a PGA player take steroids won't likely improve his or her game. Steroids give you explosive power and increased endurance. I'm not so sure that someone on 'roids would drive the ball over 400 yards at a PGA tournament. And they wouldn't benefit in chipping and putting, either.
Golf is the only sport where less is more.
