Ochoa & Tiger April 10, 2008, 6:10 am

by Gene Lamb
Women don't need to play against Men.
Tiger is a very good player but he is not God.

Lorena Ochoa in fact could compete against men on the PGA Tour, but selectively depending on the course. At the original Augusta, before they made it "Tiger-proof" (!), yes she could. She has superb control and short game. The PGA tour has many superfast courses where being in fairway is critical and size doesn't matter that much. Someday there may be a Tour for all - with differnet tees for men, women, and seniors.

As a female golf professional, women trying to play on the mens tour is ridiculous. As one person wrote in, the courses are set up so different, faster, longer, more rough and faster greens. The times they do play the same courses, check out the score differential. The mens strength and length has a strong advantage. As a proud member of the LPGA T&CP Division, I strongly believe the LPGA does a great job at promoting the game and the women should support that. As far as the nut ball who wrote this disgraceful article referring to his urine, he should go back to creative writing class.

This is a joke. Lorena dominates because the courses are 6600 yards DUDE.
Augusta 7400 yards, do the math. This shows how far we have gone down the road of gender confusion. We have one of the greatest women players and everyone wants her to play against the men. There are probably 10000 men that could dominate on the LPGA.

Lorena on PGA Tour April 9, 2008, 10:48 am

I must agree with Mr. Wolfrum, many others will find his plan moronic. I welcome any player (male or female) to put up the $ and go to PGA Q-School or Monday qualify for any PGA tournament. Earn your spot and good luck. Yes, Lorena hit a 300+ yard drive a couple weeks ago. But she's not trying to hit faster, more narrow fairways, playing from PGA rough, to PGA pin placements on PGA greens from 1000 yards further away over 18 holes. How's she going to fair on all those 220+ yard par 3's hitting woods to greens many pros hit 4 iron? I've played KIngsmill where there was a PGA event and where the LPGA now plays. The course set up is different and the course was redone to accommodate the LPGA players (READ-make it easier.) The rough is cut to different heights for LPGA and the PGA pros shot way lower #'s on a longer, tougher Kingsmill course with less technology back then. Lorena is awesome and I'd love for her to take a year off from the LPGA and try to make it on the PGA Tour. I bet she, just like Annika after Colonial, would figure out the #1 female golfer is not quite a top 120 male golfer. I think she'd struggle on the Nationwide Tour. Few people realize how small the difference in golf ability is between #60 and #220 male player in the world. If she makes about the same amount of money due to appearance fees and making a few cuts she has proven how much better the men pros are. Lorena (or Wie or Annika) may have some good weeks and even finish in the top 20 but I'd bet money she'd be back to Q-school and finish outside the top 125. At least Mr. Wolfrum didn't suggest she play the forward tees so we can see how she'd stack up from up there. She may hit a 300 yard drive once in a while but she's hitting 6 iron where most PGA players are hitting 8 or less. That will usually lead to fewer birdie chances. Thanks for the topic.

Are the editors dead? How does a 12-year-old get a job writing on what I mistakenly believed was not a two-bit rag?

Michelle Wie April 9, 2008, 8:21 am

by E.P.
I am not a fan of Wie, but I totally disagree with all these people who label her as "a bust" or "all washed up". Yes, she made some mistakes, but she has PLENTY of time to get her mind and game stabilized and stage a comeback. Even her critics would have to admit that she has some rare talents to smoke the ball further than any female player ever. Don't write her off before she reaches the age of 19!! When she gets her act together, Watch Out, she would be a FORCE on the LPGA Tour and win a TON of money. Although I haven't been a Wie fan, I might someday find myself rooting for her to stage a comeback on the LPGA and shut the critics up big-time.

WOMEN vs MEN April 9, 2008, 3:23 am

Let women participate in LPGA and men in PGA. If and only the Big IF , Ochoa happens to win the Masters what will it proof....that Tiger and the rest of the leaders are no good and should try the LPGA.

I am a dedicated golf junkie too,I check all the tours weekly, play pick 'em,yada, yada. But I would hate to see a truly great woman's career ruined by what you suggest. Even Annika at her dominant best couldn't touch the men and Wie's career is over before it even got started (although that's a case of mismanagement at it's absolute worst). The women have a good women's tour so why not just leave well enough alone?
