PGA vs NFL September 7, 2007, 6:00 pm

I love golf, play btwn 60 and 80 rounds a year, but at this time of the year, there's no way I'm going to miss watching the Patriots or the Red Sox to see a poorly devised, over-hyped and meaningless golf tournament.

Golf as a second tier sport September 6, 2007, 9:09 am

by Joe Douglas
When did golf become a second tier sport? The only way that I could accept such a comment is that all other sports that are 1st tier are a tier below golf and it is on a tier above the sports referred to as tier 1. Puleez. Sports are sports. Tiers are for the writers and enthusiasts that are narrow minded. Get a grip fellas. NSDQ

PGA vs. NFL September 6, 2007, 6:30 am

Golf is a summer sport, huh? I hope the good people at Augusta National do not read your comments that golf is watched from June to August. If they learn their mistake of having the Masters tournament being conducted in April and move it to June, July or August, the Augusta National course will not look or play very well because the rye grass fairways will be dying in the Georgia summer heat. (You do know that Augusta National is closed in the summer for that reason?).
Golf is a summer sport, I do not think so. There are millions of fans who would prefer to attend a top professional or amateur tournament over an NFL game. We will not even get into the role model comparison issues or the integrity of penalties called.
No, golf is not just a summer game like it is not a game to be played by adult males only. It is the most wonderful game for all ages to watch and play.

A Labor Day spectacular finish is the way to go. Don't compete with the NFL. That's a sure loser. 4 weeks is too long. 2 would be plenty. If you can sit a week of the playoffs, then it's not a playoff. The possible winners has already been pared down too far. And if you absolutely have to have a point structure during the playoffs, change the point structure to make you have to do well to move on, but c'mon, with this system you could finish in the top 10 twice and be done. That's silly. In the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, March Madness, etc., the hot team at the end wins it all. It's all about the pressure. That's what's exciting, not having it won before the last tournament. If Stricker holds up to the pressure on the last day, then he wins. Don't give Tiger and Phil the advantage going in. Just qualify and play on. Now that's playoffs.

I think they'll get more Michigan Wolverines than initially expected. Misery loves scenery.

Tiger and Phil put on a show, But can the FedEx Cup tackle NFL Sundays? September 5, 2007, 3:54 pm

by LJ
Not all of North America watchs NFL. The better part of this continent, British Columbia, Canada, does not have a problem with the FedEx Cup during this time of year. The NFL only becomes interesting when our season (CFL)is over and in between our NHL (Vancouver Canucks)games. Typical US comment thinking the world revolves around them.

Fedex Playoffs September 5, 2007, 2:51 pm

This whole Fedex Cup hype is a great big yawn. Who cares if a bunch of spoiled millionaire golfers has a chance to win another million. I can't be bothered to try and understand it. If PGA golf needs this to make the season exciting it is in real trouble!
A match-play tournament at the end of the season, featuring the top 16 PGA professionals would be simple, understandable and a lot more fun to watch.
Meanwhile, I'll be watching World Cup Rugby and waiting for the hockey season to start.

Will not catch on despite Tiger & Phil showdown. One week after another means the rest of the Worlds golfers have to commit to the US circuit for 5 weeks. The world is bigger than America. The event to be successful must attract the best golfers, this one never will. Take Tiger out and you'll have the Strickers of this world winning whats meant to be a huge event. The Majors should be spread around the World also, one in Australia, one in America, one in the UK, one in South Africa and one in Argentina. Golf needs a complete overhall!

It doesn't much matter what the sports writers think or do. Until the top golfers consider it worthy of playing in it, it will be irrelevant.
