US Open Setup June 19, 2007, 10:56 am

by Kenny Brown
If I am not mistaken, the US Open is supposed to be difficult. Casey did not seem to have a problem with the course while shooting 66. Cabrera was under par after after 36 holes and played pretty well on the weekend. The author of the article probably started writing about the sport back in circa 1997 and has become spoiled to the new golf style of bomb and hope, rather than be accurate off the tee, hit some GIR, and putt well. The fact is, these young golf writers are going to shout foul anytime Tiger does not win. The course was hard, but it was fair. Tiger came up short again when not leading after 54 at a major, get over it.

What a crock!! Not everyone thinks that Tiger Woods should win every tournament. I thought it was one of the most exciting finishes I have seen lately. Finally the course was not set up for Tiger Woods to win.

Apparently NBC can see no one other than Tiger Woods in its coverage of the US Open, to the exclusion of others making great, good, or mulligan shots at the same moment. We may, or possibly may not see a replay of the shots missed.
This is totally ridiculous and demeaning of what should be, at the least, GOOD COMPREHENSIVE coverage!!

Who is this writer? June 18, 2007, 9:42 am

by Jack Straw
Okay, we know your name, but what's your game? After reading the first 7-8 paragraphs, I'm wondering if you're vying for third place in a Dennis Miller write-alike contest. Your attempt at this style of writing fails so dramatically that I, the reader, am completely lost at what you're trying to deliver to me. Maybe you should create a new column called "Point - What's Your Point" and at least we would have some advanced warning that, quite possibly, this article will lead you no where.

Oakmont set up June 18, 2007, 9:16 am

I disagree with the article completely. Everyone knows that the US Open is the test of the best and show remain that way. However, having been there for two days to form my own opinions, was far better than watching rounds 3 and 4 on television to have Johnny Miller drive me crazy with his assessments of the shots and players. Can't NBC get someone who is a bit less "perfect" to give us an unbiased opinion of any golf coverage they contract to handle?

I was at Oakmont all week. The course was challenging, and with the heat and occaisonal wind gusts it really tested the golfers skills. The USGA is right on target with preparing the course for the Open and making it less easy for the players. If you want to see a lot of birdies and easy golf, then go watch people play PUTT-PUTT. Oakmont required absolute determination, focus, and demanding golf course management.

US golf badly televised June 17, 2007, 2:17 am

by Rob Chrystall
Those involved in the televising of ALL USA golf have no idea on the needs of those watching. We Golf TV watchers want to see golfers playing golf, not Score boards , rankings ,money lists, water , trees, shrubs , waterfalls, etc. Yes , Time clock 1 hour of US golf and there is only 24 minutes of golfers golfing. Compare this to watching tennis, Patrons SEE ALL the tennis from all the players. If you watch Golf from UK ,They know how to do it right , almost a whole hour of golfers golfing per hour, Who is F...ing up. Get NEW people on the job before the world tv subscribers cancel

What I'm disappointed in is this article.
I thought the Sopranos finale was perhaps one of the best in TV history---eg it actually made the viewer THINK for a change instead of handing the viewing audience some pat life or death or "wander into the sunset witness protection program" scenario so some Soprano fans might win a bet and/or have things made crystal clear for them.
The US Open setup at Oakmont is excellent, in my opinion. And as of Saturday there's a most interesting mix of types and styles of players in it because they're playing smart and they're playing tough and strategic golf for a change. When you have vastly different kinds of golfers like Cabrera, Watson, Woods and Rose, Baddeley, Funk, Toms and Ames in contention it shows viewers there's a number of ways to skin a cat in tournament golf and that's a good thing indeed. It shows it's possible to bring very different talents to the table and still contend in a major tournament.
If one wants huge cheers pealing through the pines that's for the theme of the Masters, not the US Open. ANGC should do better with that because they lost that traditional theme this year with a set up not only too narrow but too firm on Thurs-Saturday.
Furthermore, any golf reporter who preordains any US Open competitor at Oakmont who makes it to the weekend and in contention, a schlub, needs to go get a day job on a subject he knows something about, in my opinion.

I agree with the article. The setup makes for crazy game of survivor rather a show of good golf.

Your review and comments about the open are as smart as a rock, if you want it to be easy lets put bumper railings along the fairways, and give free drops to any one who is not in the short grass. If you want to see holes in one, watch putt-putt,I like to see pro's take on a challenge, after all it is a major and the boys will have to use more clubs than just a driver and wedge to score.
