Autographs October 10, 2005, 12:04 pm

Whenever I see an arrogant jerk like Eldrick not deign to descend from his cloud and not sign autographs for the fans, particularly kids I recall the behaviour of two of the truly greatest athletes in history. Babe Ruth was famous for having endless time to sign for and even play with any kids who called for his attention. Wayne Gretzky's two sons played hockey in the same league as my son and every time he attended one of their games he faced a line of young hockey fans craving the signature of the greatest player in the history of the sport. I never saw one of them go away disappointed and now a whole generation of players have sweaters, sticks pucks and hats bearing his signature. That is how a class act comports himself. From what I understand Phil Mickelson and Arnold Palmer treat their fans this way too. I guess Tiger and Jack are above such intimate payback to the fans who love them. It is ultimately their loss, not ours because who needs the autograph of such supercilious gasbags.

It's unfortunate that the players haven't discovered the real meaning of the game and the sport and are choosing to go the way of the other major league sports.

Gee Chris,
If you don't want to be pressed into writing about "autographs", DON'T!!! I do not recall you being required or asked to do so. You just feel compelled to sling a little dirt on an event of triumph. No matter what, you have a hard time getting over yourself. It must be painful being so miserable.

Took my 11 yr old daughter to the ladies U.S. Open on a practice round day and could not get an autograph. Was told only after the round was over. Come on, it was a practice round and when the round ended there were hundreds of young people standing around the 18th green. Well that turns me off to go to another ladies event. I took her to the International the year before and the boys were very nice about doing them.I thought this was a ladies thing but now see the idea of no autographs seaking into the men's event. It's sad when it is kids asking.

Was there any money distributed to the winners/losers of the captioned tournament?
Nothing said in media reports. Perhaps just an expense-paid trip for players and wives.
