Presidents Cup the WFL of the Tour

Please !!!!!!! The Ryder Cup will always stand head and shoulders about the President's Cup, no matter how much the Tour props this imitation up.
The sports graveyard is full of "substitute" venues ( wasn't the WFL and Vince McMahon's XFL going to revolutionize the pigskin alternative?).
No the ghost of Sam Ryder can rest peacefully.

Watching the opening ceremonies on TV just now, I just heard Captain Jack Nicklaus say in reference to the Ryder Cup Matches:
"I think the Presidents Cup has the potential to be a much larger event."

President's cup

What is really going on is that the PGA Tour is seeking to control the entire television revenue package, except for the USGA events. The PGA events are perceived as weaker and hence the Player's Championship growing in prestige and being billed as the Fifth Major, while spots are being taken from PGA Professionals in the PGA. Anyone who cared at all about the Ryder Cup would never sanction an almost identical event to run in off years. Unless the intent was to weaken and perhaps replace the Ryder Cup.
These events are huge to the USGA and the PGA. Without them, the PGA would be in trouble. Why would the PGA Tour do knowingly do something to weaken the Association that runs is arguably the most influential in the game. The PGA trains the players that play their Tour. They run most of the golf courses. They, along with the USGA, are the shepards of the game.
Someone needs to pay attention here. I believe if you asked Tiger Woods if he would do anything to weaken the PGA, he would say absolutely not. They why promote the President's Cup and the Player's Championship. By the way, notice the similarity in the names. Not a coincidence, I think.

Would they be looking to bring in golfers from outside Europe to strengthen the team that has won it 7 times in the last 10 attempts or to bolster the lacklustre "I dont really care about this team event" USA?

Not at all. I mean as a way to strengthen the appeal of the event throughout the world. Hotstreaks come and go, ebb and flow. Check the Ryder Cup historic records and you'll see that between 1927-83, the U.S. lost exactly three times.
Look, I'm not saying the Ryder Cup Matches are hurting ..... just that the Presidents Cup brings competition to the table and the RC folks HAVE to be aware of that.

I have always watched the Ryder Cup. I have never watched the President's Cup and never will. The Ryder Cup is about promoting golf, the Presidents Cup is about the Tour and it's players lining their pockets with money

Hmm. At presidentscup.com, it says: What makes The Presidents Cup unique from most professional golf tournaments is that players compete only for national pride because there is no purse. Net revenues are divided into equal shares that the players and Captains designate for charities or golf-related projects of their choice. Contributions in their names are made through PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. The first five Presidents Cups have generated over U.S. $10 million for charities worldwide.

Presidents Cup runneth over: New kid threatens Ryder Cup preeminence

In response to your articles comments that Europe may need to consider including the rest of the world in future Ryder Cup matches, I think you may have this the wrong way round. Given the drubbing the Americans received in the last event and the fact that Europe has won the 4 of the last 5 events I think it may be Tiger, Leftie and co that need to now consider joining up with the rest of the world. I assume your comments were in the hope that an opposing team which includes the rest of the world may give the Americans a better chance to win in the Ryder Cup or at least reduce the points difference to a more respectable level!!!
I look forward to your comments in your next article.

G Muir
