Mark Mcguire Article May 25, 2005, 10:22 am

by Scott
The Golf Course for many of us is a place to get lost in ourselves and bring us to our knees so that we can learn something about ourselves. With all the difficulties in life here on planet Earth, we need a place of sanctuary where we can escape the daily grind. Along with going to play golf we also watch golf on TV,study with our instructors, watch videos, and read golf magazines. When I open a magazine or e mail about a golf related subject, I like to feel good and happy and sink into my Golf Sanctuary. When I read an article about golf that makes me feel sick or disgusted, it goes against every reason that I play golf. The article on Mr. Mcguire is not really the issue. The reason I am sick and want to puke is because Mr. Baldwin is allowed to feed from his pathetic life and write articles that make people sick. Where is the sanctuary in our golf e mail when we have to read this crap? Please take me off of your list. I would love to never see another column from you ever again.
And by the way, Mr. Mcguire plays golf because he loves it and it is a sanctuary for him. I would guess that Mr. Baldwin does not play golf or is perfect or has never done anything wrong in his entire life so he now has the right to cast judgement on everybody else. Thank you for making me sick. You have achieved your goal.

inept journalism May 25, 2005, 10:19 am

McGwire didn't take up golf once he quit baseball, he started playing long before. He's not covering up for his "other job" by playing golf anymore than you would be. Hypocrite. Whether or not he used steroids is still up in the air, and your assertion that he used is actually less valid than the assertion that he didn't use simply because of the fact that nothing has been proven yet. The poster who made reference to a witch hunt is exactly right.
Sure hes not as big as he used to be, but he also isn't playing baseball and doing athletic training everyday like he used to. I won't deny that Andro surely helped that situation but he did nothing wrong by using Andro. He also was mature enough to own up to what he had done and take the negative publicity for it. You're attempting to bring down the reputation and question the morals and ethics of a guy who has a charity aimed at helping abused children.
This is the first article that I have read by you and already I find your journalism to be poor and misdirected. Write about real golf related stories or go write for a tabloid.

Mark McGuire story May 25, 2005, 8:35 am

Just in case you need a refresher course in American liberty, free speech also means not having to talk when you don't want to. McGuire did the one thing the other baseball players at the Congressional hearing, MCGUIRE DID NOT LIE. And for that he's being pilloried by the most of the small minds in the American press.
There's no doubt he did steriods. There is also no doubt that Palmeiro and Sosa did steriods. Yet Sosa suddenly forgot how to speak English and Palmiero, reminiscent of another public figure, pointed his finger and stated,"I did not have sex with that" . . . whoops, wrong public figure . . . "I did not use steriods." Sure, Raphie. Then why is it when I first saw his face I honestly thought he was Julio Eglesias he's lost so much weight.
So, let's not condemn McGuire for not lieing, OK? I believe most of us were taught this is an admirable trait.

"washed up old farts on the so-called Champions Tour." ????
This passes for journalism or editorial commentary ?
What kind of total morons do you have writing for your publication ? Probably this was the single dumbest coment I have ever read in any golf publication in my life time.
Drop my name from your email list.
Good luck and good riddance.

Chris,
Thanks for writing some good commentary and calling things like they are. I think you are right on the mark (no pun intended) with your comments on McGwire, and even more so regarding the "Champs" tour! Maybe it should be called the "surly old men that live in their own world of ego satisfaction" tour. Please keep up your column, it's fun to read and calls things realistically, not negatively.

Having just hosted the Orange County Championship with Mr. McGwire as a major participant I was surprised by your attack in your on-line publication. Mark was the most pleasant, respectful and focused golfer at the competition and finshed 6th in a strong field of 56 of the best players Orange County has to offer. His passion for the game is genuine and for you and your paper to continue this attack with no real information turns your publication into a rag tabloid that goes after the hot topics and personal attacks rather than concentrating on real stories. I would like to have my name taken off the listserve for this website at once.

It is really becoming difficult to read your column. Everything you write is negative. Get the chip off of your shoulder. Many, many people enjoy the great game of golf in this world. Just because an "ex-baseballer" uttered the "no comment" pharase doesn't mean that golf is on the decline. There are many interesting stories that you could focus on in the world of golf. Find just one.

Story on McGwire May 25, 2005, 5:42 am

What's is up with all of Chris' negative columns. Does he not have a life? McGwire has been an avid golfer since the day he walked away from baseball. This is not his escape, it is his hobby. I used to enjoy reading the columns that appeared in yuor e-mails, but lately they have all been the same - ranting negativism that has nothing to do with helping me explore new regions of the world to play golf. Change your style or risk going out like McGwire - ungracefully.

Mark McGuire US Open Qualifying May 25, 2005, 5:26 am

Since when is US Open sectional qualifying a high-profile event. I've lived in the same place for 14 years and never have seen any local media coverage on the US Open Sectional qualifying. I understand the point he's trying to make about Mr. McGuire dodging baseball/steroid questions, but playing in the first of two stages of an amateur golf event would hardly been considered newsworthy. By the way, who won that sectional event the day McGuire played.

I am really tired of negative stories by little steamshovels who never could. Mark Mc. never used a banned substance to enhance himself. He did whatever he did to improve himself (such as the addition of supplelments), and did so BEFORE they were banned. I played college ball for three years before injuries mounted up. I weighed 175 pounds and played offensaive center. By the way, I was slow, but had what was called heart. My heart and my desire are what has made me a walking advertisement for Vioxx 35 years later. In 1969 I heard about this great product called dynabols, (anabolic steriods) and chose not to take them because of a family doctor who set down with me and in detail told what the down side of the drugs were. At this time (1969), these drugs were not outlawed. I was also a purist who thought that weight training alone would take me forward and paay for my college education. At a certain level, heart just can't overcome size and speed. Bottom line of all this pertaining to Mark Mc. is that changes were made after the field was level. And yes, I am so against performance drugs even if they were first called supplements. Please try to be positive when your forum is seen by so many people. Travis McManemin
