Last weekend, I sat down to watch two potentially exciting semi-finals (DiMarco/Goosen and Toms/Poulter). What did I see? I saw flags blowing in the wind, a stream running behind a tree, a schematic telling me what I was watching, and a fountain in a lake!
What did I not see? Critical bunker shots in the Toms/Poulter match, critical drives in the other game plus many, many other shots. This is unacceptable!
With only 4 players on the course, it is eminently possible to see every shot by all players, including the preparation, execution and result..and still leave plenty time for station announcements and ads.
Accenture must be spending $10-million per tournament (including prize money). The TV golf audience must be one of their targets (in addition to paid spectators and corporate entertainment.
They, and you and other publications, should lean on the TV companies to cut out this rubbish coverage. Otherwise, it will kill the appeal of TV.
Me? I switched off after 10 holes. And I didn't even bother to switch on for the finals on Sunday! Even a fanatical golfer like me can only take so much frustration.
Surely, that's not what Accenture wants?
