Nicklaus farewell at St Andrews July 3, 2005, 11:48 pm

In a little over a week i hope to be at St Andrews and like many fellow Brits we are well aware this is our last time to pay homage to the great Nicklaus . Growing up in the seventies i was priveledged to see the great man in his prime with the memorable rivalry with Watson and will be sadly missed . The "duel in the sun " was my highlight at Turnburry which was the classic and despite how many majors Woods goes on to win there will be no one who graced the game on and off the course the way Jack has . As Kippling once wrote "when you can handle defeat and victory the same you will be a man my son " . Well there was no finer example than Jack , his immense talent , his fantastic sportmanship(no aggresive fist pumping or over the top intimidation tactics ) and his nerves of steel . We will follow you next week and come the 18th we will be saying goodbye to the greatest golfer that ever graced our championship and indeed the game .

Congratulations to the Womens Open winner but the LPGA missed a much needed golden opportunity to capitalize on a win by the amateur Pressel.
