Paul Casey February 24, 2005, 10:10 am

Since when does cheering for Phil Mickelson at the U.S Open become booing Retief Goosen.
Are the British fans really trying to tell American sports fans how to act. Yes we can be obnoxious as fans, but last time I checked a "football" crowd in England is not the best behaved bunch.
Obviously, Paul Casey has the right to say whatever he wants to, but he also has to deal with the results of his comments.
I do not understand how Paul can be defended for his comments. The are ignorant and stupid and he should apologize for making them. Paul must have some deep down hatred for Americans to make these comments to a journalist. It would be one thing to say those things to his friends after a 6 pack of beer. But to says those things to a journalist makes no sense.

Hats off to Paul Casey. In matchplay a player must develope a "healthy hatred" of the enemy(opponent). This is just good mental preperation for a match. In a world of politcal correctness I applaud Paul for speaking his mind. I doubt if he really hates us. But, I think we need to be scolded for some of our rude fans.

In reply to your Jan 18th column at WorldGolf.com I would have to say that I agree with Paul Casey’s views of american fans especially those loud-mouthed dolts that constantly yell “Get in the hole” just as the ball is being struck. Some of these idiots even yell before impact, which draws severe looks from Tiger Woods. Don’t they understand golf is not football or baseball? Doesn’t anyone give them instructions on how to act at a PGA event? I turn the sound off because it is too annoying and if Vijay Singh, Paul Casey, Mike Weir, Ernie Els aren’t in the tournament I don’t even bother to watch. Why? Because most of the americans on tour are just trying to pad their wallet and get endorsements from ball and club manufacturers so the amateur golfers have to pay outlandish prices for something that costs about 10% of what they are charged.
I wouldn’t be too hard on the British and their use of the word bloody because the american alternative is far more disgusting and is now commonplace in songs sung by guys who don’t know how to speak the English language.
Nor would I be too harsh on Harry for wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party. There are a lot of americans who carry guns and knifes everywhere they go to protect themselves from the rest of the population who carry guns and knives. A uniform of a former historically important regime is no worse than americans portraying them in the movies over and over again.
I also wouldn’t be too proud of a country that produces gangsta rap, reality TV and George W Bush. Nor would I be knocking a country that is your biggest ally in a war GWB wanted to avenge his father’s failure to get Saddam the first time. By the way where is Osama Bin Laden? I guess it doesn’t really matter anymore.
The cry USA is not that common anymore and in fact all it does is stir the passions of the players as well as fans outside the states who properly hate the americans. You have to realize that Casey’s remarks concerning the ignorance of the american people about the rest of the world is very accurate. It was quoted Paul Casey said americans are stupid. In fact they are ignorant. Most yanks think stupid and ignorant are the same thing which emphasizes the point. The majority don’t even have a clue about their closest trading partner to the north of them. All they know is that their northern neighbours (with a u) love hockey and have a lot of good fishing.
Give me a reply when an american golf team can beat the Europeans or the rest of the world in a TEAM event. It’s time you realized the best golfers are not all american, there are in fact a lot fewer than ever before. By the way the Nationwide tour is not the second best tour in the world.

Lived in England 4 years, married one of them 35 years ago, love the place and people. HOWEVER, if Paul Casey doesn't care for us let him stay in the UK, drink his pint, root for Man United and leave us alone. We don't need him here...see how much money he can make on the European tour!

I think Paul Casey's remarks have been taken out of context by the media, as always. Here's a youg man who has made his home in the USA; his "properly hates" comment, I'm sure, was just an expression of wanting to beat the US in the Ryder Cup. There's been plenty of ridiculous media comment about golfers of many nationalities, such as, for example, your own stupid connection of Prince Willian (in his Nazi suit), who is an upper class twit to put it mildly, with Casey. Where did you dream up that literary gem?
Casey was unwise to say what he did and US fans are a bit extreme but please exercise some tolerance for youth.

Mr.Bob Henderson should get his facts right before he talks about the Royal family, it was Prince Harry who had the nazi fancy dress on and not Prince William.Any way now that Bush is in again how many other countrys will fell the rathe of the so called land of the free.

TIM----I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT ON. FOLKS THAT WANT TO LIVE IN THE USA---MAKE MONEY HERE--ENJOY THIS COUNTRY SHOULD LEARN TO SPEAK BETTER OF THE COUNTRY AND THE AMERICANS. IF THEY CAN'T DO THAT THEN WE SHOULD INVITE THEM TO LEAVE.

The article on Casey and the writer's opion regarding his comments and person are fair ball. However, when you decide to generalize Casey, and personally recognize him as representing the collective opion and mind of an entire nation, you become exactly what you attempted to critisize. In following you lead, I should develop the opion from your article that all American's are thin skinned, narrow minded idiots, but I'm sorry because you are the exception and not the rule. In Canada I constantly hear American bashing in the media over something one silly American has said or done, and 200 million plus are wrongly painted with the same brush. To ridicule a nation over the comment of an idividual is moronic and sickens me, and some of those in the media tend to be the worst offenders.
And by the way, Prince Harry wore the Nazi uniform to a costume party not a jewish wedding. I sure that present day nazi's are infuriated that he was making a mockery of them. BUT, there is no story in that so lets spin the story to putting a facist into Buckingham Palace.

Sorry to disagree. But I'll bet a lot of the non-american people who live in your country were recruited by universities and companies who recognized their talent and industry. Your country has become better because of it.

So much of this was Paul Casey's comments being taken COMPLETELY out of context.
He said they "right hate" Americans ~during the competition~. I trust he was probably talking with his tongue firmly planted in cheek. I'm sure the Americans "right hate" the Europeans during heated competition like that too.
He clarified later saying that he lives in America, pays taxes in America, and has an American girlfriend.
And about Prince Harry... there's conflicting stories about that too. I've read everything saying he does that all the time for no reason to saying he went to a "poor taste costume party." What gets more poor taste than that, especially if you're english?
