It is my personal opinion that VJ a Giant asshole. He does absolutely nothing for the game except give a bad name. For a man of his position to act the way he does to his caddy and to his fellow male or female golfers, he should NEVER be in the hall. Granted he is a good player but that doesn't measure the man. The hall should reinstate the old rule that they need 75% for any golfer to get in and I also agree with Dominick Leone that all golfers should wait for a time period to pass AFTER they retire before they can make it to the hall. Great men should not be measured by what they are doing but by what they have left behind. That should be the golden rule.

Vijay Backs Into the HOF April 27, 2005, 8:28 am

by Bill Descoteaux
I guess there isn't much in the way of interesting golf news when a West Coast Bureau Chief has to be hurling insults to make a story. The fact that Vijay won because John Daly erred on his tee shot is good luck. John's ball took a bad hop to the left. In golf there is luck, be it good or bad. John didn't feel he needed to go to the practice range to keep loose. To second guess his choice is to be an armchair quarterback. He should know what is good for him when it comes to his swing! Vijay even admitted he wasn't putting that well this week. He was surprised no-one passed him from the field. He hung in there instead of collapsing. To call this "backing into a tournament" is ridiculous. Then to write the "biggest back-in of the week" was Vijay's election into the Hall of Fame is down right nasty. Especially when he writes, "he is a jerk masquerading as a gentleman." Vijay may not be popular with some of the media. That doesn't mean he's a jerk. If someone doesn't like the system to enter into the HOF then, complain to the HOF hierarchy, don't crap all over the inductee!Within his peers, fellow golfers, he is a good natured and friendly soul. He is always willing to help other players at the practice range with their swings. The guy works hard and has earned everything the hard way... from the dirt. That deserves respect. He has made mistakes along the way but, haven't we all? It must be nice to write from a glass house. It would be better if one could stick to the real story, Vijay hung in there to the end, instead of decending to the level of a jealous mudslinger!

VJ in or OUT? April 27, 2005, 6:28 am

I have to agree on the VJ in the Hall of Fame story. What would be wrong with the headline, "VJ Misses Hall of Fame by 10 points."? Hells bells, has Tiger been installed yet? Might as well, if he hasn't, why bother waiting until he passes Jack on the all time Major list? Even if he doesn't, he should be a lock...might as well get it over with.

WG Hall of Fame April 27, 2005, 5:25 am

Why is this sport being such a pre-madonna about instituting "Worthy" golfers into a permanent shrine. No other "Professional" sport inducts their candidates before they retire and are completely out of the sport for X number of years. Yet, those who make the rules believe a player must be nominated and even inducted before they are even half-way through their career. Once a player is enshrined how difficult would it be to deshrine them should he/she fall from the graces of good, no make that exceptional golf let alone the outside influences of criminal or illegal activities.
Professional Golf is great to watch but our rule makers need to take another look and fall in line with the rest of Professional Sports for acknowledging the greatest of the great golfers.
