| Staying in Niagara on the Lake |

Your article was fine except in its dismissal of NOTL places to stay. Not only are the several hotels, but the B&B experience there, such as ArborView, is fabulous. Readers of this article would do well to ignore his advice about where to stay and be sure to stay in NOTL, where there are great restaurants, wineries, theater, shopping and far fewer tourists. To say nothing of the ability to just walk around.

The Royal Montreal is the oldest golf club in North America, but is presently located on a course built in 1959. Niagara-on-the-Lake is the oldest golf course in North America.

| Niagara not so friendly |

I was in Niagara a few years ago and showed up as a single on a Friday morning at the Niagara on the Lake Club (my wife had a business conference) My hope was, that maybe there would be a threesome I could fit in with. I walked into the pro shop and politely explained my situation and asked if maybe there was a threesome that I could fit in with. The pro said he was all full. I said, I would just hang around and putt a bit and see if anything opens up, and the pro then told me "did you hear what I said? We are full.
for the record, I was dressed appropriately and my only guess it was some sort of French Canadian "friendliness" that I just didn't understand.

French Canadian "friendliness"? You were in Ontario... Quebec is the French-Canadian province.

I was there a few years ago as well. I showed up as a single very early on a mid-week morning. The staff could not have been nicer. I was the first one off the tee and they even let a friend of mine, who didn't play golf, walk the course with me at no charge. When we finished one of the senior ladies who volunteers as a starter gave a us a tour of the club house and history lesson on the course for another 20 minutes! We could have stayed all day if it were up to her, but we had to meet our wives for lunch.
