What are you on????? With a few minor exceptions, the Open winner is a typically a Hall of Fame /future candidate. Jack, Tiger, Stewart, Trevino, Watson, Miller, Irwin, Strange, Green, Player, Els, Goosen come immediately to mind. Sure you will get the odd Steve Jones / Andy North types, but on the whole, the cream generally rises to the top. Oakmont will not be an exception. Let's see what the best players can do on an extremely difficult course........to me, that's what championship golf is all about.

I have to agree with Chris. If I want to watch someone shoot 85 or 90 all I have to do is call up a couple of my friends and head to the course. There is no reason, other than like the man said, and that is that the higher ups in the USGA wants all the talk to be about how they set up the course. Not how good everyone shot and the best player won. No matter who that person is.
But watching the best in the world stumble around a course that you or I would shoot a hundred and 50 on is no fun. I'll probably end up doing like I did at this years Masters, watch the first day just to see who might be able to find half the balls they hit and then just check every evening to see if the leader has committed suicide from running out of balls to finish the round with.

Chris Baldwin will be forgotten long before Geoff or Retief. Like, immediately. Ta-ta.

Absolutely. Calling Goosen anything other than one of the top players in the WORLD is simply ridiculous. Balwin, what a jack-a**.

Take a deep breath, Chris. The major championship world as we know it is not coming to an end. The majors are refreshing to watch because the 100+ 2nd tier pros on the Tour have very little chance to win because they have to use imagination and skill to get the ball near the hole for a chance at a birdie or par rather than just fire away at the pin for birdie or eagle with little consequence every week on tour. Jack, Tiger, Ben, Gary and Sam have won all those majors due to lucky bounces? I don't think so.

I completely agree with Hacker Dave. Chris, why do you want to see guys go out and make $1 million dollars per year hitting the same shots you hit week in and week out? Challenge these guys. I am sick of seeing guys including Tiger, who I love, hit bad shots off the fairway into the gallery and being able to play it back to the hole. If they hit a bad shot they should be penalized for it. Let it come to rest in some un godly place where not only can't you hit it from, you don't even want to go near the area for fear you may find it and have to play it out of jail using 2 or three strokes. That is what happens to me on Saturdays. The person who plays the most consistently for the weekend typically wins the tournament. A one hit wonder typically doesn't shoot a 10 under or 8 under in one round and go on to win. Thats why they play 4 rounds. If that were not the case, the tournament would be a one round event. guys who consistently have 4 rounds under par do. Guys who consistently play at the top of the leader board do. These are the people you are used to seeing. The tough course conditions weed out inconsistent players. Sure Tiger sprays his ball often, but his game is the most complete and consistent, and the most consistent ever when he is really on. Let them grind it out and when they make birdie, let it be as special as taking money out of your weekend skins pot.
Exciting isn't watching a guy with a two shot lead stroll up 18 on the last day. Exciting is knowing that if he hits his tee shot in the rough, a birdie and a bogey could send this into a playoff.

I agree to find excitement viewing golf the LPGA is the place to go..I think mostly because 90% of the PGA viewing time is Tiger playing,,tiger playing the same hole last..tiger walking up to his next shot,,and then if that is not enough,,A Tiger Commercial....Give me the Olgilveys and the Goose anyday...........

Sorry PGAMIKE, I was not refering to you but to Chris Baldwin, the author who for some reason believes that two us open wins by retief goosen do not count for anything..not to mention a runner up at the 2006 players and a T3 at the Masters in 2006
Yup Chris, you are a clown and not very orignial
