I am just elated to see the greatest players struggle on a course. It lets them know how we feel when we play. They are all playing the same course so we will all see who does the best.

I am happy to see golf courses made tougher. I am sick and tired of seeing the pros play on courses where they are 25 under par. Even 8 under is too low. These men are professionals. I like to see the winner be no more than 4 under par. I read a bunch of whining and crying by the public and a few golfers. Not to mention you guys and some sports writers. So the pros have to play a course or two for the whole golf season that does not give up 14 under par for the winner. If they don't like it they don't have to play. It is about time the winners come in at plus 3 to minus 1.

USGA conditions for US Open June 13, 2007, 8:53 pm

Chris, get a grip. The Open in any venue should not be a walk in the park for any of the pro golfers on tour. It should be a test of skill, tallent and yes luck. What pro has not won because of a lucky bounce. It's called 'the rub of the green'. Personally, which is what these comments are about, I would much rather watch a golf match that is a test of the pros rather than another ho hum birdie, birdie, birdie... In the end the winner is the player who brings the best game physically and mantally for the conditions of play. As for the USGA, keep the standards of play high as real golfers have come to expect.

What about the mantra we are always hearing from the PGA about the professionals: THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!
Now is the time for them to show us how good they are, and to stop complaining.
Birdie should be a reward for excellent shot making, not a try on every hole where it simply becomes a putting contest.

I totally disagree with the assessment of the US Open. All the US Open requires is that you hit the fairway. This is what golf is all about. As an amateur (and not a very good one) I enjoy seeing the pros (who can display their other-worldly talents at almost every other tournament of the year)being punished for being greedy off the tee. If they play within themselves and literally play one shot at a time they can hit greens and make decent scores. That is much more entertaining, because there is so much pressure on each shot. The whole tournament is so much more exciting than the other tournaments (excpet when a US Open course is defenseless like Pebble Beach in 2000). By the way, Goosen is a phenomenal player, he's won two of these brutal tournaments and should have one a third. I'll take a US Open setup every time!

Regardless of the difficulty of the course it is going to be very interesting to see how the very best golfers in the world play from the church pews, the long grass and putt on vinyl greens. The winner is going to be the guy who can create shots that the situations calls for even if they are not normal public golf course ones. Maybe someone will be coming to the last hole with a one stroke lead and get himself in trouble. It is drama in the making and will be talked about for a long, long time. Even if the winning score is 10 over par.

I have to agree the USGA has gone nuts as they make a course ridiculously unfair as "a test for the best golfers." Think back to Olympic when chipping/putting within a foot of the hole means you wind up with a 40-yard pitch back onto the green. Or the putts at Augusta that you hit 180 degrees from the hole--it becomes a joke. Oh, and I love it when they put the hole 8 feet from the fringe (that seems to be popular the last few years). I guess they are afraid the golfers will show their actual skill and make a few birdies (wouldn't that be an insult to them, better show those golfers who's boss). And letting the greens brown out...why don't they just lay down linoleum and be done with it---oy!

I totally agree with Mr. Lapidus. When you make a course so easy( putting from 15 yds off the green) that is not championship golf. If theyu cant hit the fairways, so be it. Pay the price. If they cant put so be it, 3 putt.
