Tiger's behaviour April 1, 2008, 11:07 am

by Richard Allen
He could take a lot of lessons from Jack when it comes to his attitude. Isn't it bad enough that we as golf fans have to listen to the announcers talking, especially when they can't say a sentence without saying how great Tiger is. It's getting so a person has to watch golf with mute button on. It's really sickening to listen to them repeatedly bragging him up.

TIGER April 1, 2008, 11:03 am

TIGER MIGHT HAVE AN OUTBURST ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT SO DO OTHER PLAYERS. BECAUSE HE IS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD, WHICH BRINGS ON MUCH PUBLICITY, EVERY DETAIL OF HIS PLAY, ACTIONS, ETC ARE OPEN FOR COMMENTS LIKE YOURS. HE IS A FIRST CLASS PLAYER, GENTLEMEN WITH A LOVE FOR THE SPORT THAT IS UNCONDITIONAL. START TRACKING OTHER PLAYERS AS MUCH AS YOU DO TIGER, YOU WILL FIND THEY ARE NOT PERFECT EITHER. YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION, THAT IS WHAT IT IS, YOUR OPINION. IN MY OPINION, NO ONE IS PERFECT, INDEED A STAR IS BORN.

tiger outburst et al April 1, 2008, 10:54 am

I agree with your editorial. I remember being very disappointed with the foul abuse issuing forth from the mouth of Gary Player a few years ago at the Open. Golf is one of the few games left where gentlemanly behaviour is still expected and generally achieved, let's keep the standards where posible. Incidentally the outburst reported on is only one of many instances of similar behaviour from Tiger, including club throwing and general hostility after any less than perfect shot.

Middle Ground April 1, 2008, 10:52 am

When I was a junior golfer I said something which was overheard by an adult who was a friend of our family.
Where did I hear the expression I used--while caddying for 4 guys who inadvertantly taught me a new vocabulary. I never swore again on the golf course.
Tiger is not being singled out unfairly-If he were playing with 3 buddies at Lake Nona it does not matter but when the mike is on it does matter---Verbal outbursts are going to happen--The question is why can't high profile people simply use other words such as Crap, shucks.
His dedication is so impressive that i know he could get a handle on his mouth.
It is surprising that his advisors have not given him the straight truth.

Tiger's Outburst April 1, 2008, 10:33 am

Gut check everybody. I'm sure Tiger wishes he hadn't had the outburst but I'm sure he wishes more that the photographer would have abided by courtesy rules. It's unfortunate that kids may have heard the outburst but as parents you are responsible for using good and bad examples in educating your children. I'm a young guy and am getting quite disgusted with our countries breeding of over sensitive people. A photographer got a earful from someone in the heat of battle. So what. Just because you may or may not manifest your competitive fire the same doesn't mean everyone else that is different is wrong. The situation is what it is. Deal with it. You want to ridicule golfers these days about etiquette but the galleries of today are exponentially worse than in the past.

Tiger and integrity April 1, 2008, 10:30 am

by Larry Busch
I'm not sure what your axe to grind is, but I think your getting "integrity" confused with what your concept of "manners" and "etiquette" are. Would it be better if Tiger (and many, many more golfers) did not use profanity. But that's not the same thing as not having integrity. Integrity is shown by the way he respects the game itself, and by the honesty by which his life is governed, including the possibility of some profane language that may come out naturally. (You think he might have learned some of that from being raised and tutored by an ex military man?)
I think most parents would like to think that the traits golf teaches their children are those of honesty and taking responsibility for their own actions, at the same time as learning that perfection can be sought but not always achieved. If you are looking to the First Tee program to teach them etiquette and proper language, you have abdicated your responsibilities as a parent.

Professional's Conduct April 1, 2008, 10:09 am

I agree whole heartly with the article. Maybe Tiger needs to be a little more concerned with the God he is using to condemn someone. I am offended everytime. It makes me turn off the TV coverage or not want to watch this man. Call on the devil to do the damning or Donald Duck. I would not want to stand before a holy God and answer for the language and the vanity of using our God's name in rage. But thank God, He sent us His Son to pay for our sins. Maybe Tiger ought to cry out for that Gift instead of against others, or our own wayward misfortunes in our life.

Tiger's Temper April 1, 2008, 10:08 am

by Russ Antler
I started hanging around golf courses when I was 7 or 8. I used to sneak into the LA Open at Rancho Park. Pro golfers always seemed to have the attitude that to be jerks and have bad attitudes is a golf birth rite. So from that standpoint, bad tempered golfers have been around forever (Terrible Tempered Tommy Bolt, former US Open Champion among many).
The PGA Tour has attempted to modify player conduct, but they can only do so much. I don't think Tiger would get so angry if those snapping shutters would once and for all get it. It's this type of constant behavior that provokes a bad reaction from Tiger. The people know they shouldn't do it, but they do it anyway. Why is accepted on the Tee Box? Is Tiger just supposed to be cordial and friendly as this stuff continues repeatedly? Maybe the PGA Tour might do something about it...

Tiger's Mouth April 1, 2008, 9:56 am

by Chance Balkmeyer
Mr. Tucker is clinging to an age-old truism that simply isn't true. Golf likes to pretend it has class, but really doesn't any more. Arnie has one of the filthiest mouths anywhere. Believe me, I know. And he has plenty of company in the pro golf ranks.
As for all those parents introducing their kids to golf... it's because they want their kids to BE Tiger Woods, not because of some desire they have for them to become polite citizens.
When you send out future newsletter emails, could you do us a favor and warn us in advance when a piece is written by Mr. Tucker? It's either that or I'll have to unsubscribe.

THE COMMENT BELOW SHOWS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED GOLF OR IF YOU HAVE PLAYER IT WAS BY YOURSELF. I HAVE PLAYER WITH PRIEST WHO TURNED THE AIR BLUE. WHEATER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT IT IS PART OF GOLF. SO PLEASE BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF WITH A GOLFER.
So the swearing and threats are nothing out of line? Then I suppose the PGA Tour has become chock full of coddled country club boys who, under pressure, develop the unfiltered profanities of a deranged street bum. The honor of the grand game we know has taken a back seat to the high stakes of $7 million purses.
