Rocco Rocks! June 17, 2008, 8:37 am

I agree 110% - the TV media focused way too much on Tiger and not enough on Rocco's abilities, his journey to get where we was, his battle with a bad back (all I heard was something about a knee injury)....you get the picture. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Tiger fan, and we just witnessed one of the best shows this game has ever given us. Having grown up in western PA and being the same age as Rocco, I've been following Rocco's game for 20+ years, and will continue to do so. I just know that today, Rocco is feeling really good about himself & his game, despite the lost. Not too many others would handle it the way he did. Hats off to a great competitor....no,wait...to two great competitors.

The Golden Goose (Tiger?) June 17, 2008, 8:33 am

NBC knows. Or at least their execs did by moving the US Open to prime time in the East. The fact that they had a 13.5 share (NFL-type numbers) on Sunday proves the Tiger factor is real and therefore profitable. Without him in the tournament or in the lead, there is no audience. So when he is the focus of the broadcast, the talking heads are giving what the people want...all Tiger all the time.
I think the players and executives of the PGA know it and support it as well.

Announcer's Performance June 17, 2008, 8:22 am

Agree 100% - - Tiger is undoubtedly the man to beat, but if I didn't have the opportunity to see bits of the coverage , I wouldn't have believed how one sided the coverage was - - - sad but true. Kudo's to Tiger for his win and overcoming his knee problems - - not Hogan-esque as the bobbleheads proported - - but close. However, mega kudo's to Rocco for his gutsy, professional, classy performance. I truly believe that Rocco did more for the game of golf this weekend than we can possibly imagine.

Roccos not a Nobody June 17, 2008, 8:20 am

On ESPN this morning, they referred to "the guy Tiger beat" as a "nobody". He had the tournament one a couple times. Tiger's amazing recovery shots from adjacent fairways and Roccos missed short putt kept Tiger in the game. I think Tiger's win was mostly due to "rub of the green this time". It could have gone either way. Tiger's luck came at the right times. Rocco Mediate is not a nobody. He's been a good player for a long time. That guy Snedecker at the Masters. He's a nobody, but to refer to Rocco as a nobody is an unnecessary insult from ignoramuses at ESPN.

Way too much Tiger June 17, 2008, 8:19 am

I thoroughly agree with your opinion on the TV coverage. Even when Tiger was paired with Robert Karllson, we only saw Tiger tee off, never Robert. TV needs to include the other players in the field. I wanted Rocco to win. He kept trying, no matter what and when interviewed afterwards had high praise for Tiger. I did not hear Tiger praise Rocco in any interview. It's always me, me, me with Tiger.

Sandy, I think you should have audio on your TV checked. Tiger was very gracious with his praise of Rocco...even to the point of saying he would enjoy the playoff because Rocco is one of the nicest guys on tour. Not to mention his comments on the battle Rocco waged during the playoffs. Seems you're blinded and deafened by your own bias...

Sandy - If you don't like Tiger that is fine and I do understand but for you to write that Tiger had no praise for Rocco is ridiculous and childish. If you listen to Tiger's speech on the green he did talk about Rocco very highly and just didn't drool all over him like Rocco did of Tiger. I love Rocco Mediate but if you ask me he was talking up Tiger as much as any Sports Channel was, it got a little old itself.....

Rocco well respected. June 17, 2008, 8:05 am

Usually, the second place finished wanders off into the sunset and not much is said about them afterwards. In Roc’s case, I think he was well respected for his near win and the fact that he gave Tiger a “fight” (even if Tiger had only 1.5 knees). Basically, from my point of view, Roc received more accolades and press time than the 2nd place finisher normally gets, and, more importantly, he deserved it. He has a whole new legion of fans.
Wolf, I’m not sure how you got your job as a writer. You write poorly and your perspective is cynical, as best.

Too much Tiger? June 17, 2008, 7:54 am

Wolf, you must have been sucking up too many brews during the TV show. I think they (talking heads to you) gave Rocco terrific coverage and great attention and nothing but praise all the way. True, they kept going back to TW but, why not? He's the big story. TV coverage was great.

golf coverage June 17, 2008, 7:54 am

I totally agree with the comments made regarding television coverage.
Comming from the UK and a keen golfer I find it almost impossible to listen or watch the coverage.
Undoubtedlt Tiger is the best in the world by far, however ir would be nice to see some other golfers especially some of the Euorpeans that in contention. I am dreading watching the up and coming Ryder cup because unfortunately the coverage only shows one team and listening to its sickly comments is unbearable. The ryder cup is one event that the Americans cannot completely control. I am considering flying back to the UK to listen and watch an unbiased coverage
