The real issue August 21, 2007, 2:02 pm

The problem with the FedEx Cup has nothing to do with the program, but rather more of a systemic problem of radical overpayment in the form of ever increasing purses throughout the golf season. If purses were more like they were several years ago it would bolster participation and player exitement in FedEx as the players would be more hungry. Paying millionaires way more money is not the answer. Cutting the outrageous purses is the answer.

Golf is different. I say let golf be 'over' for the big boys and those of us that are happy to have an off season both watching and playing this great game. I like the time to think about how I'll improve, how they'll improve, buy new improvement junk at the shows, and go to Myrtle for improvement validation! We don't need the FedEx cup made-for-tv baloney. I certainly don't care.

Fedex Cup August 21, 2007, 1:44 pm

by Kevin Carty
You said it, not me..."manufactured playoffs". We golf fans get it but the PGA Tour does not. Of course, the Fedex is not an alternative. It is something that the PGA Tour can own. Don't forget that the four Majors are controlled by Augusta, the Royal and Ancient, the USGA, and the PGA of America thus the failed attempt at having the Player's considered the 5th Major. Will I watch? Sure but I am not the demographic group they want (too old). Will the casual golfer watch? Probably in the same numbers that would watch if it never had a name like Fedex Cup. Tiger MIA? Should tell you enough.

play-offs August 21, 2007, 1:42 pm

Play-offs in golf? Give your head a shake Tim Finchem. Golf does not lend itself to play-offs like most other sports do. The only thing that comes close is the match play championship. This is a complete waste of time with an insane first prize of $10 million. Don't the top guys make more than enough as it is? Why doesn't the PGA Tour dictate to it's players (yes, that should include Tiger Woods) that they MUST play a certain amount of events instead of picking and choosing. I would like to see every player play at least 20-25 events maybe then some of the lesser tournaments might see Tiger once in a while. If the PGA Tour insists on play-offs then take the top 64, just like the match play, and play matches over a period of 2 months just like real play-offs. I can't see any interest in this. It doesn't even come close to the NFL or World Series play-offs. I am totally against this stupidity and hope it falls flat on it's face (after Tiger picks up his nice cheque for $10 million).
