Yes I agreed that charity is an individual preference. May be he has other important commmitments or obligations that need him to channel his winning money

I personally think it is classless for anyone to judge someone who is doing a selfless act as in giving to charity. Who says Vijay has to give anything? $35,000 may be a small amount of Vijay's salary but it is still a tremendous amount of money to donate. We all wonder why Vijay is hesitant to communicate with the media. Now we know why. He must feel like he can't win.

I don't want to knock anyone who gives to charity because something is better than nothing. However, one would think that those who have more would donate more, but everyone has their own idea of what constitutes a donation. I think a donation is something you anonymously sacrifice for the sake of others. It shouldn't be something you give in order to receive recongnition.

If everyone in the world gave .37 of their incomes to tsunami relief, there would be truckloads of money. Because of your lack of sensitivity, I have blocked your emails for the future as to be simply spam on my computer. Next time think before you type.

I guess it's OK to slam VJ because he donated things he got for free to the relief fund. Where does it say that you have to donate a certain percentage of your earnings to anything?
What about Tiger? He earned $300 million last year. What percentage did he donate?
Get off your high horse and be grateful they didn't come after you for a percentage of your income.

always difficult to critise anyone who gives to charity , but I feel it is better to give donations anonymously.
But I suppose where the value of the goods is in part related to the donar even that is difficult.

Some of the points made by you and others are valid indeed. You should never criticize anyone for donating to or assisting others in need. Imagine what a hole this place would be if no one did. THe problem I have with the celebrities, their "handlers" and the general population is that somehow because of their status in their particular occupation/sport/entertainment we somehow hold these people in such high esteem no matter what the subject or topic. Mr. Singh or Mssrs. O'Neal are going to give a million dollars to relieve starvation in the world, quick call the newspaper. It's fantastic what they did, does it have to be a media item or press release? Some will say that it encourages others to act likewise because these people are role models. Pulleaze. These celebrities are people who feel compelled to act for what every reason they feel expedient - whether it be of general comapssion for those in need or the chance to sell a few more tickets to the show or a chance to gain an endorsement. I no more need the example of an athlete or entertainer to guide me to what I know is right than I need them to help me decide who to vote on or what shirt to wear. We give these people far too much credit and far too much of our time. All that being said - I am sure the people of Southeast Asia are grateful for whatever support they receive, regardless of who it came from or how much of their disposable net income it represents.

I have appreciated reading all the comments on VJ and his charity! You are ALL CORRECT! Charity is something personal between you and the receiver. If you have faith in God and believe in what the Bible teaches you are encouraged to joyfully keep a maximum of 90% of your income and give 10% to those in need. If you do not believe in God then giving is totally up to you. If you choose to give one dime....we should all rejoice and be glad....because I am sure that a 3 year old child, victim of the Tsunami would appreciate ANYTHING you give. Last, “Comparison is the root of all unhappiness!” We should all look at ourselves and ask “what can I do to make a difference!”
