Fed EX August 21, 2007, 4:40 pm

There is nothing wrong with the FED EX format except for the fact that Tiger is a prick......he is not a team player and does not realize if it had not been for Jack, Arnie, Trevino, Player and some of the older guys who went out of their way to support the tour, he and other young millionaire players now who grew up with silver spoons would not be so lucky due to the above 4 seniors sacrificing their time for others and giving back to the game. I think Jack and Arnie told him he should give more back to the game several years ago, but he thinks he is too above it to listen to them. If he plays, it gets the attention or not as any other tournament he elects to drop out of.

Tiger beats to HIS drum and one of his drums is that he doesn't like to play 4 weeks in a row, especially in a format that requires him being in "peak" performance mode. He builds and plans everything around the majors and maybe he's figured out a way to work this new format in a manner that will allow him to win it. He can use his 1st tourney as the warm-up and then go heads down focused on winning the last 2 and take home the trophy. He knows better than anyone that attempting to play peak golf for 4 straight weeks is a fools game!

Tiger is the draw, because he is a great golfer. When Tiger is not involved in a tournament interests disappears. The problem for the PGA tour and all other golf events is the lack of a good PR program for the tour players. The players need to be more interactive with the people attending these events.

The FedExCup will be a joke. When the world's best golfer misses the first and possibly most important tournament(because it is the first) it tells you just how important it isn't. Plus does anybody really care. Granted, with Tiger not playing gives other second place players a chance. (If only in there own mind). However seeing how these guys are "not really good" Tiger will still win it by just playing his B game. The professional game of golf is really in a sad state right now with one man and the rest boys on the PGA tour. It is truely amazing how mentally weak these guys are between the ears when you watch them. Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Ray Floyd to mention a few were solid mentally and that is why they could stand up to Jack in his hey day. It isn't it great that football is back?

How about a different format:
Matchplay with seeding.
If you kick butt all year you get byes!
While the rest of them sort out who get a chance at the top tier in the final round. By the way make the money now not 25 years from now.

FED UP oh sorry FED EX Cup August 21, 2007, 3:56 pm

by John T. Doyle
Truth be known........Tiger doesnt need or want the Fed ups cup.....He wants Championships and Major Championships......He won't be remembered for winning 23 Fed Ex cups!!AND nee I say it.....He doesn't need the $$$
"But something needed to be done to make the Tour relevant and interesting beyond August" How about the US Open in late September??
Or if there going to continue to emulate Nascar.....They could have The US Open in January......First tourney of the year!!

MOST OF THE TOP AND WITH WOODS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE BARCLAYS JUST UNDERSCORES THE FACT THE TOP PLAYERS HAVE LOST TOUCH WITH WHO THEY ARE AND WHERE THE ENORMOUSLY OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT
OF MONEY THEY MAKE ACTUALLY COME FROM.
I QUIT WATCHING BASEBALL, FOOTBALL AND
BASKETBALL JUST FOR THIS REASON AND NOW WOODS HAS CONVINCED ME TO STOP WATCHING THESE SPOILED KIDS PLAYING GOLD I.E. GOLF

A thoughtful article, but I think it's ridiculous to try to maintain interest in any sport for the better part of 12 months. The problem with virtually every sport is that the schedule is too long--who wants to follow basketball in June, or football in February, or baseball in November? Similarly, trying to hype golf when people are following football is asking a bit much. Trying to extend the schedule deep into the fall simply guarantees that it will end, in the words of T.S. Eliot, "not with a bang but with a whimper." It would be great to reverse this and have the PGA Championship the culmination of the season, perhaps in mid-September. And interest could be greatly enhanced by returning to its original format of match play (with nothing but 36 hole matches to enhance the possibility that the finals would include two marquis stars).

The "thrill" of the Fed Ex Cup series is effectively blown with the withdrawl of Tiger Woods from the Barclays Tournament.
The points formula of the Fed Ex Cup is way too complicated and confusing.
How can golf fans get excited about such a competition when it is so difficult to understand who is winning and why?
