Mr. Baldwin has criticized Miss Wie for not acting as champion should, because she is not checking off the milestones in there conventional order. He cited Tiger as some one who took on all comes. Tiger has stated from early on, that his career goal is to surpass every milestone that the legendary Jack Nicholas set either earlier or by more. He is on track to do just that. First, your reference to winning US Amateurs, Jack won it twice during his collegiate career, so Tiger won three times and younger and then he turned pro. He reached his first and second career slams ahead of Jack and got to 10 majors sooner. He is following his plan
Michelle Wie has stated her mark is not to match or surpass another women golfer. She wants to play with the best men in the world as an equal. She has stated that she wants to be the first woman to compete in the Masters and win it. This years Women’s Public Links was scheduled against the Men’s tournament and the Men’s Public Links champion gets an invitation to the Masters. That is the prize.
She played in the Evian Masters because she was flying to Europe for the Women’s Open so doing two tournaments only makes sense. The best men do this all the time for Men’s Open. By the way, she finished second in France and the following week, at the Women’s Open, against the best women golfers in the world she finished third in a major. She matched the champion’s sub par score in the final three rounds of play. Her poor first round score played in bad weather, even by British standards, was the thing that held her back. Tiger has lost most of his tournaments because of a poor first round scores that even his Sunday charge could not over come. In those two weeks of tournament play, she had only three players’ score better than her and none of those players played as well in both tournaments. She surpassed Annika in both tournaments easily.
Miss Pressel has her sights set on the LPGA as her request for a waiver points to. She wanted a free pass to the LPGA rather than going through the fall Q-school and waiting until she turns 18 in May. If she earned her card, she could still compete in the early season tournaments on sponsor exemptions. This will be her last amateur event unless she changes her mind and attends Duke next fall. The LPGA turned her down because they do not believe that she could be competitive over a whole season yet. Miss Wie has proven that she would be in the top group on the money list if she were not an amateur. Miss Wie may regret not picking a few amateur trophies when she had her chance, but that is not the prize that she has her eye on.
Finally, on the issue of the current US Women’s Amateur, the USGA scheduled Miss Wie with a 7 AM tee on Monday in Atlanta. A quick internet check of flight schedules from Liverpool to Atlanta shows the best she could have done is arrive in Atlanta at 7:30 AM. Question the USGA on how badly they wanted Michelle there. No professional golfer, unless they had a charted jet standing at the airport with the engine running would play in England on Sunday and start a Pro-AM, let alone an actual tournament, at 7 AM in Atlanta on Monday. The only person ducking something here is Mr. Baldwin and that is reality.

You must be living under a rock if you really think Wie is not dodging the competition of kids her own age. Think about it. It would ruin all her hype if she lost to all these other juniors out there, and she would loose her share to them if she only have guts enough to tee it up with them. There are a lot of really strong junior girls out there now that can compete at any level. You really think Pressel can't be sucessful on the LPGA? Get real. She almost won the US Open. And where was Wie? Crying because she was embarrassed with her 82. Time will tell the story and you'll find the Wie has made a mistake of not learning how to win. As these other great junior players start hitting the tour she'll continue to fall down the list.

Why have we deceided that it's up to us to chart Wies' future? If shes after the $s and the publicity to get those dollars, what makes her different from any other athlete today? I know Tiger's not in it for the money, but then again, he already has a carload.Michelle is capable of competing at a pro level now, why wait? I'm not sure amateur victories are more of a learning process then facing the best for the next few years.

Great piece of writing! Part of becoming a champion is playing in tournaments that challenge the individual. You need to be able to win properly and lose graciously. A champion does not hide behind excuses and "easy outs". Michelle needs to play against her peers, head to head, and challenge them. Don't leave any doubts about "coulda, woulda, shoulda" about who would have beat whom.

Your article is written without conviction. As I read I got the sense you were just trying to stir up emotions and, judging from the responses, you've succeded. It would be nice to know what you really thought of Michelle Wie and what she represents to the golf world rather than take a position that serves you best.

...and what's your point. Sure it's all about the money, so what. Who gives a hoot about a trophy and pat on the back when your justly earned marketability is at stake. Michelle is a well grounded KID with a good idea of what she would like to accomplish in her golfing career.

I didn't even give your article the respect of finishing it! You and so many others in your profession are "ducking" the fact that Michelle Wie is a true talent. Women's Amateur, a joke for her. True there are a few in the field with the potential to beat her but as we have seen even Tiger is human on occasion. How about 2 top 3's in women's majors this year! That's not enough! Oh sorry, she has to win to show that she belongs! Why not spend your time pecking away at an article that someone wants to read!
