Great course for its location

It’s very difficult to build a really nice and playable course in the Appalachian hills, but this course as done a great job dealing with that issue. The front nine is really nice, with a couple of very challenging holes, #3 in particular, a longish par 4 with the green a deep dip between the landing area of your tee shot and green and #9 has a challenging tee shot, over a lake to an uphill fairway. The other 8 holes on the front nine are mostly gently rolling rises and dips, with a few flat holes along side the creek. Most of the back nine is set out in the steeper hills, but for the most part the course works well with the terrain. 10 and 18 are on the flatter area along side the front nine, and 11 and 17 tee off from a high hilltop to flat fairways below and are beautiful golf holes. The holes between 11 and 17 demonstrate the challenge that the terrain posed to the designer. Hole 12 is probably the only one that really doesn’t work well, sharp dogleg right up a steep hill and the green itself is slanted on a noticeable angle and Ive seen a lot of putts come right back to the putter on that hole. 14 is a par three that works pretty well but if you hit short of the green, you got another steep hill to deal with. 15 is a long par 5 playing mostly downhill and it’s a good golf hole. Holes 13 and 16 run parallel to one another up a steepish hill, but they are both short par 4 and had to be sort of sandwiched together to make it all fit. This is not a criticism of the course, I’m only saying it’s difficult to build a golf course in steep hilly country, and this course did as fine a job meeting that challenge as anyone could.

All in all a really nice course, the course I grew up playing. Many fond memories for me here.

Hidden Gem

This course is off the beaten path but it is a true gem especially right now as the condition of the course is excellent and the greens are like carpet. There are also plenty of different kinds of holes and plenty of elevation on the course. Definitely play here if get the chance.

Short Course-Great Conditions!

This is another one of those often overlooked tracks that at first glance appear to be pushovers...but in fact actually have substance. I had played Green Hills several times in the distant past and was pleasantly surprised at the teeth this little gem has grown. The course, at a little over 6200 yards , appears to be a pitch and putt. However, once put to the test, it requires a little finesse, some good shot making skills and an adept putting stroke...all good attributes to have in your bag anyway! The trees have grown exponentially since I last graced the fairways and the conditions have improved greatly. It was always a fun place to play but now the immaculate conditions and the new growth have given the course a little more bite. The par threes always required good shot making skills as they all play in the 200 yard range and several of the par fours demand good position layups from the tees. I was very pleased with the great conditions and was happy to be able to play the ball down. My outing was only marred by a Memorial Day foursome in front that had no idea that other groups on the course were there to play and not just ride around and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature on a golf course as was their idea for spending the day! With that being said, I am going to put this destination back on my list of fun, well conditioned places to play...as long as it's not an all day affair on a holiday.
